I agree with you on the HIPPA thing being so strict here....I don't agree with the rules we have either. But I must abide by them if I want to keep my job. People have been fired here, for what the company says is violating HIPPA for reasons I think are stupid and over the top. But that is the way it is here.

There isn't enough info there for me to see why you are so worried. Have you considered a different line of work if this kind of thing gets you this upset enough to post to a message board of strangers rather than call police?

It's great you can be so calm if someone calls your office repeatedly and threatened to go there to teach you a lesson. Not everyone is the Man of Steel.The reality is that terrible things have happened when disgruntled, irate people show up at offices. Watch the news. It doesn't mean she needs to get another job. She just needed to calm down and take proper action. And if i'm not mistaken, she said she did calm down.

There is nothing in her post that indicates where this clinic is or who these people are, so there is no violation of HIPAA.

Now posting on the DIS on work time and on your work computer...somehow that is not a violation of company policy.

Deb, does Hippa have specific rules if it's a mental facility? I'm thinking the guy wants to make an appt for the woman and the staff has to pull her chart, which is giving out info that the person is a patient there.

I make appointments for my DM77 for her PCP and her neurologist. This is how it usually goes:

Me: I'd like to make an appointment for my DM,insert her name, she is a patient of insert dr. name

Appointment taker: her date of birth please

Me: this is her date of birth

Receptionist: ok, what will you be bringing her in for

Me: this or that

then the appointment is made.

Now: I did work at a hospital as a pbx operator, that was interesting. patients can request that no one knows they are there, a friend of said person could say I know such and such is there, i just talked to them, but if that person had a certain marker next to their name, i would have to say i'm sorry but no one is listed with that name is here.

Those calls were always fun.

I just don't understand why no one understands this. If someone is new and makes an appointment, we make the appointment. Now of course, a relative COULD BE posing as the new client, we have no way of knowing that. There is really nothing we can do about that.

HOWEVER, once a person is a client here, (unless it is someone under 18, and then we verify with the parent that childs date of birth) then to make the appointment of an existing client is to acknowledge that person is being seen for services here. I don't see how that is so hard to understand. Silly and over the top? Probably. But that is our rules.

I'm wondering what her/his boss will do if he reads this and be assured the colleges will rat him or her out sooner or later.

Who is she? Where does she work? What's the name of the person who called her? What's the name of the patient? What's the nature of the illness?

Maybe this will help - for first time appointments the clients go through a different office. What I usually say is, if I am at the front, when someone calls and says I need to make an appt, then I say, Have you been seen here before? If the answer is no, I put them through to the other number. I realize I could be talking to Aunt Joan and she is pretending to be Sarah and and knows Sarah's date of birth. But there is no way I can help that. I am acting on faith that the person I am talking to is Sarah. However in this case, it was a man, and he said, my GF, so we know we aren't talking to her. I hope this makes sense....

The president and vice president of our company made that rule. Fine for them - they are on the other side of the building and they would be ok.

Then I think someone needs to sit down with them & ask for some extra measure of security--locked doors that only open when buzzed in, security guards or something. And if they don't want to pay for that, then you should be able to call the police. I don't think I'd feel comfortable with the current situation.

Honestly, I don't think she's doing anything wrong here. We don't even know what state she's posting from. I think you're reaching with these posts.

When I worked at a bank, it was common for all of us to have nightmares about being held up and or taken hostage. Something like that could happen anyday. No warning. didn't need to piss anyone off for it to happen. Part of the job. Something we had to deal with if we wanted to work there. Needed to be able to stay calm and thinking clearly under situation like that.

that's why I'm saying if this isn't something you can handle, you might wish to change jobs.

OP, I agree with you. Just laugh it off. You post a simple request and you get the third degree on how your company makes appointments! Some people are watching too much of the Casey Anthony trial and have become prosecutors in their minds!
