Any suggestions for a good vacume cleaner under $200?

Ours died with a cloud of smoke this weekend.
I don't need anything fancy, just good suction, decent length cord, leaning toward disposable bag but open to the bagless.

I don't have a recommendation but a vent that I would never buy another Oreck!!! Bought it 7 years ago and it's always having trouble, burning smell, needs belt replacing!
The thing is I only have a 5x8 and 2x5 area rugs and this stupid vacuum never works right! sorry to vent looking forward to the responses you get for recommendation.

I have Eureka 4870MZ Boss Smart-Vac Upright HEPA Vacuum Cleaner. We got it about 3-4 years ago and it is still going strong. I think we paid about $130 at the time but it's available on amazon for $118.

We have a Bissell Healthy Home that works great. My only complaint is it's really heavy, so if you have to carry it up and down stairs you might want to take that into consideration. It has the longest cord. I can vacuum the entire upstairs without switching outlets.

We jumped on this one last week -- and it was under $120!

For those curious, it works like a charm -- and unlike PP's Bisselll, you can carry it up/downstairs with the greatest of ease...

Thanks for the replies! I'll def. stay away from that Orek! And check other reviews on the other names mentioned. I need to get one SOON!

I wouldn't buy another Oreck either, though I love it being lightweight

just got this last week and love it:

Kenmore makes a GREAT lightweight vacuum that is much cheaper than the Oreck - the bags are 1/4 the cost - and if I remember correctly its beltless.

I bought one for my Mom & Dad when I worked for Sears in college. At that time she was still able to walk and cleaning the house was good exercise- but she has really horrible Rheumatoid Arthritis and is unable to walk, clean, or anything now.

But anyway - you may want to stop into your local Sears store!

I DO NOT recommend anything that is 'Shark' brand - they are made to be disposable - and you will dispose of them at least once a year and buy a new one. Yes - they are powerful - but yes - they are made with very cheap parts!

OR - if you really want to buy a vacuum that REALLY SUCKS - in a GREAT way - take a Dyson for a spin! We LOVE OURS!!!
