Upgrading AMEX Every day to Preferred

I wanted to upgrade my card and knew there was an annual fee but do they ALWAYS charge the annual fee immediately? I opened up a chat and they said they could do it right then. But I was hoping they could waive the fee the first year, but she said that it would be in the next month's statement. Has anyone ever had any luck getting it waived or am I out of luck?

I didn't upgrade this card but opened it as the preferred version and they did charge the fee right then. I think Amex doesn't usually waive annual fees. Even so, between the 4.5% on groceries and their special offers, the annual fee is more than covered.
