If the ship isn't full does everyone get upgraded? I'm guessing yes, but does anyone know for sure?

Only if you ask for it

Maybe the lower levels but not everyone would be upgraded

Thanks Tiggerfan.

I don't know if I asked the right question so I'm going to try asking differently.

Let's say you have a ship where all the Cat 1,2,3 is booked, and there is availability in all other categories. Would the cat 5s get bumped up to open cat 4s and then cat 6s get bumped up to all remaining open cat 5s ect. on down until all the higher categories were full? automatically?

Now this was several years ago but my experience is No.

I sailed on the Magic back when it still did the 3/4 day cruises, same as the Wonder. The ship was less than half full - there was only one dinner seating and the shows were only done once per night (so everyone had early dinner and late show).

We had booked a Cat 12 and were upgraded to a Cat 10. We had a wonderful time, but I know lots of folks who had minor upgrades or no upgrade at all.

I would think that to some extent they would want to rotate what rooms are empty on less than full cruises. This would give them a chance to deep clean, give the room a good once over, make minor repairs etc.

I've always said that if any magic formula was found as to what trigger an upgrade, then everyone would do it (example - if someone found that if you booked on a Monday you were much more apt to get upgraded - word would get out and everyone would book on a Monday -flooding reservations on that day). Because of this, they keep the process random. However, if they started a policy of always upgrading on less than full ships, word would get out, and more folks would book during the off-time and the less than full ships would get a lot fuller - of course then the upgrades for everyone wouldn't happen anymore.

I was told by staff, that they do try to up-grade to higher categories, if the ship is not as full. I was told they do this at the last minute in order to get more people on board at cheap prices. They make it so they can do last minute cheap getaway options. NOw if there is some cleaning or maint. that needs to be done on a room, of course they will keep that one empty. After all this is how they get you "hooked" with the other rooms. I know it worked in our case. We now pay for the higher cat. becuase we like the room. Have fun.:thumbsup2

I think it depends on many factors. Our December DD was not full and there were lots of last minute changes - it seemed to me that they were given to repeat cruisers. Many people were changed one or 2 days before.

We were also told no reduction in upgrades at the port but some people posted that they got a reduced rate to upgrade. I have seen posts that there are differences in how individual CM's handle these requests for upgrades.

We had 2 Cat. 7 cabins and could have easily gotten bumped up to Cat. 6, but we were not. (first time cruisers here) Other people who had been bumped up on several past cruises did not get moved and in fact stayed in inside cabins. Several in our group actually downgraded because they found the prices had dropped so much for the cheaper cabins that they decided to just save the money.

I think it's totally random and might help if you have gone before.

We got bumped from a cat 9 to a cat 5 and had no idea until we got all of the stuff about 2-3 weeks prior.

The best way to go is book the room you really need for us it has to be at least a cat 10 (214' b/c of the split bathroom) nothing lower. Don't book expecting you will get one b/c sooooooooooo many don't.

Goodluck!

Does the upgrade reflect on the disney site prior to cruising?

When dh and I were cm's we were upgraded from a lower deck (say 2 or 3) to a balcony room. All our friends were upgraded the same way. We never asked (or expected) anything. It was a nice surprise. Then a fellow cm of dh opened her yap and made a big fuss about it on her next cruise. The free upgrades were officially over for TDS at that point. Nobody has really been fond of her since then.

Definitely book what you would be comfortable with and if you get upgraded-great. If not, it's a great ship.

At times it will, and other times it is too late. I have read where lots of people only find out at check-in. We have never been so lucky..Pixie dust to others:wizard:

We got bumped from a 9 to a 5 also on the Feb 17 cruise, and that happened the day before the cruise, we found out when we got to the port.
Nice suprise and now we are spoiled.....

Has anyone been bumped up and out of an SPR? And, if so, were you happy with the upgrade?

Same w/us. We sailed cat 5 in 2003, booked a 5 for 9/06..got a free upgrade to a 4. Rebooked onboard...what do you think we booked, a 4. There isn't that much difference, but when we go in 3/08, we will have a 14 month old and that extra space will make a difference for us!! We would have not even thought about it and would have probably rebooked a 5 if we hadn't have been in there to begin with!!
