Upgrade Question

How do you go about asking for an upgrade? Do you ask how much they would charge you for an upgrade, and hope they give you a good deal, or do you specifically ask for a free upgrade? I want to take advantage of all possible deals, but I feel weird about asking for something for free. :> Thanks.

This is how I approach the subject. At the check in desk I politely and calmly ask if any kind of an upgrade is possible. Sometimes the answer is no, sometimes yes for a higher rate, and sometimes it is free. It all starts with you asking the question. I am not bothered by asking, and depending on the situation a small price increase is worthwhile, other times it is not. You won't know if you don't ask. Go for it.

I don't really know. I would think that alot depends upon how one asks. I have heard people checking in "demand" an upgrade and of course be denied while others who are pleasant, calm, and friendly (in fact the next person waiting in line - who happens to be from Iowa) get a complementary upgrade for the asking. I think the CMs who work at the desks have a certain amount of flexibility in terms of how these things are done. But why would they use up their allotment on rude, aggressive patrons?

We were given an upgrade without even asking . Didn't know it until we got to the room.

We have never asked for an upgrade, we were always given them. Last trip we go upgraded from Standard to a Courtyard view

We were upgraded from a standard room at AKL to a Savannah room for free. We never even asked. Too nervous!!

When we checked in at Saratoga Springs resort I politely asked the clerk about the chance of an upgrade and what it would cost. He checked with his manager in the back room and came out and told me that my upgrade was approved. I asked him the rate and he told me it was the same rate we had booked our original room.

It was that simple. Of course it helps that the resort was prett empty that week.
