Was brought up in another forum I regular, but who are some people who would be universally mourned when they die?

I kept thinking and really couldn't come up with that many. Two that came to mind were Nelson Mandella and Desmond Tutu.

Honestly I've thought about this for a few minutes and it's tough to think of one. I think our world has gotten so polarized and people are so negative to things that seem so positive!! I'm not even sure. I would say Billy Graham, but even he has been viewed as controversial lately.

I can't think of one. If the person is a spiritual leader, there are those who will only offer scorn. If they are a political leader of any kind, they have made enemies on their climb to the top.

Princesss Diana probably met the criteria of a person who has helped enough people in a selfless way, without striving for power or using a religious platform, but she has already passed.

Do we have another Princess Diana out there?

Melinda Gates might be considered, but she stays so far behind the scenes in her efforts that no one really recognizes her.

Norman Borlaug
Honored with
- Nobel Peace Prize
- Congressional Gold Medal
- Presidential Medal of Freedom
- National Medal of Science
- Padma Vibhusham
- 49 honorary degrees
and many more

Through his research and work he is credited with saving more than one billion people from starvation.

Not Billy, his son Franklin is the 1 being viewed as controversial. I always liked Billy, but I can't say I'll mourn him all that much. Won't mourn Franklin at all though. I have issues with the museum. And the burial fight with his parents.

Billy is completely retired and not saying anything to the press anymore. Except of course when Obama met him a few weeks ago, But Obama had to go to him.

WHO??:confused3

All I can think of are the people who are already gone. None of our living Ex-Presidents are as popular as Reagan was. Obama would probably have to die in office to come even close(NO, I do not want him to die. Just an example).

Pope Benedict is a wonderful man but won't be mourned on the scale of Pope John Paul the II.

Norman Borlaug
...

A great man, but he had millions of critics right here in America - probably because he was considered the father of the "Green Revolution", which was hijacked later in his life by politicians. At any rate, he is already dead.

I agree with the first part, but even Princess Diana had her detractors (not that you can't mourn someone and still think they had flaws). I would imagine her issues with food made her less popular with the parents of young, anorexic girls.

A good point. No matter the person, there are people out there looking for the negative instead of the positive. Look hard enough at anyone and you will find fault.

Interesting question.

They say that people really mourned the loss of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis and of course there was quite a bit of fuss when Michael Jackson died. But I can't imagine anyone being universally mourned whether a pop culture icon or a political figure. Is there anyone out there actually appreciated by everyone?

Believe me when I say Princess Diana wasn't even mourned by everyone in the UK, far less universally mourned. Oh, there was the outpouring of grief and the mass hysteria, but an awful lot of people were like :confused3 .

The person who springs to mind for me is Stephen Hawking. My mother died of the same disease he suffers from and how he has lasted this long with it beggars belief. He has managed a tremendous amount of mind-blowing work despite his troubles and it raises questions as to what a fit and healthy Stephen Hawking could have achieved.

Never even heard of Norman Borlaug!! Should I have?

Hawking has no enemies, but is he beloved enough to really be mourned? Same problem with Gates.

A remarkable man - really did save billions from starvation.

Steven Spielberg...who doesn't love him?

Aaaaaaaaaaand....Bill Murray.
