Universal AP purchase

Hi,
I'm planning to purchase a three parks AP for Universal this year, in order to use it for a trip next year too and take advantage of the AP rates. I will transfer from WDW early morning to Cabana Bay and my plan is:
- leave the baggage with bell services
- walk to Volcano Bay to purchase the AP
- walk back to the resort to check in (I need the AP to check in)
Would this plan work? Can I buy an AP at Volcano bay? Is the walk to the water park short from Cabana Bay?

You don't need the AP to check in, even if you reserved an AP rate at the hotel. We have never once been asked to show our AP when booking an AP rate. Is there a reason why you wouldn't buy it online in advance?

If I buy it online do I have to activate it onsite? I am planning to come back next year so I want to keep it valid as long as possible.

If you buy it online, it shouldn't start until you use it for the first time.
