United Airlines Forces Man off of oversold flight

But you didn't pay for a seat on a specific plane.

Then why aren't all flight prices the same regardless or time and day of departure? Part of the price of the ticket is what time and what day.

If I buy a movie ticket for the 7:45PM showing of a movie, doesn't that imply I bought a ticket for a specific time? Should the movie theatre be allowed to oversell and tell me to come back a different day or time?

On one of our flights in the USA they were asking for volunteers to be bumped at the gate pre-boarding.

This too hard for United?

United is a big company. They should have the resources to find another set of crew. I mean, have u ever seen Disneyland have a ride no operating because of lack of CMs? at least for the new flight, they could book everyone on other airlines hours in advanced. and actually deny them from checking in. Then again... that would mean less money... CEO no likie dikie...

Apparently not always. My son's travel for a job interview this weekend was really messed up because Delta couldn't get his flight crew there in time. His first leg ended up delayed by 5 hours so he missed his connecting flight. He ended up having to stay the night in Minneapolis (without his checked bag) and couldn't get out of there until 7:30 the next night.

Delta was messed up for days because of bad storms in Atlanta last week.

Yeah, but ultimately it came down to the flight crew in his case. They had a plane, but no crew.

it basically states that he has a limited medical license due to his past. i think its meant to make the passenger look bad. honestly his past doesnt really have anything to do with the situation.

If those reports are true then he sounds like someone that I wouldn't want to be my doctor but they have absolutely nothing to do with this incident. The airline handled the situation ridiculously badly. The officers called in escalated rather than mitigated. All around a huge cluster.

The oversold situation should have been handled at the gate. Everyone has a price. United should have kept upping the ante until they found four people's.

Just about the worst example of customer service that I have ever seen.

Absolutely. Maybe not everybody has a price, but they only needed 4. And I'd be willing to bet for more money they would have found enough volunteers.

Sometimes my children don't listen and follow instructions but I don't go around bashing their faces into armrests and dragging them through the house until they do what I want.

There's ways to deal with these types of situations. I'm sure they could have talked him down (offer MORE money). It would have taken some time but I'm sure it could have been done. Especially since it wasn't HIS fault.

What else are we supposed to do when our kids don't listen???

Terrible analogy. Let's try a different one.

You drive your kid to school. He refuses to get out and go to class. You tell him multiple times to get out, including taking his toys away, and he tells you to go jump off a bridge.

Guarantee you will unbuckle his seat belt and carry him into the building.

Everything can change when you enter in that purchase; the flight time and the plane are not guaranteed. All you bought is the transportation from point A to point B.

They did not pick that man up and carry him.

I would not bash anyone's face into an armrest and drag them down an aisle bleeding if my life was not in some type of danger. The cops acted like bullies. No one on that flight was in danger.

United just didn't want to give the proper compensation, that the people on that flight deemed necessary, to get someone to volunteer. Had they kept upping the price someone would have taken it.

Do you know for a fact that he wasn't offered the maximum compensation when they were trying to get him to leave?

What we could use more of are people who listen to and follow instructions.

Agree! If you've read any of my past posts you'll now I am REALLY BIG on personal responsibility!! And it sounds like this guy did not handle himself well.

HOWEVER: that does not absolve United from handling this horribly. There is NO WAY that they do a post-mortem on this fiasco and determine that they did everything RIGHT. Not sure why some on here are so intent on proving that they did. :confused3
