I just happened to glance at a post that said united had changed it's carry on allowance and reduced the sizes of the bags? CRAP!!! I just bought a samsonite carryon suitcase. It's approx .5" too wide, 1" too high.

I haven't flown with united in years, are they really sticklers for sizes? I'm flying out of a smaller airport, Kansas City, not sure if that makes a difference at all, but we have a layover in Cleveland. We will have layovers on the way back too. I spent $80 on this bag and I would hate to return it because I love it so much. :sad2: If it's that little of a difference, will they really fuss about it? ugh.

The sizers at the gates are actually a bit larger than the carry on size. My experience is at some gates/airports, they announce the new size restrictions and warn about bags which are too large. Other times they say nothing and ignore large bags. If your bag doesn't look too large, you should be fine. You can check your bag in a UA sizer at the airport (don't do it at the one at your gate, just in case it doesn't fit).

Since we have connecting flights etc, I think I may suck it up and return my suitcase :( I'll try to find a smaller one I guess. I wanted to have ample room to put a change of clothes in for each family member as our flight gets in late, and with DME, we won't get our luggage till the next morning.

I bought one of the eBags TLS Mother Lode Weekender Junior bags when DH and I went to WDW last November. I could have packed everything in this bag! It holds so much stuff and keeps it all very accessible. I loved it so much, I bought one for each of our girls (ages 9 and 11) and now DH is thinking about one too. It's lightweight, versatile and eBags has a lifetime guarantee.

one suggestion if you decide to get your bags at the airport, when you pack make sure you have clothes for everyone in each case. there is always a chance that one bag will not make it with you. nothing worse than to have clothes for everyone but one kid or as happened to brother in law. they had 5 checked bags on way home, he decided to put his keys in his bag so he did not loose out of a pocket on flight. you guessed it one bag did not make, his bag.

Yep, I was already planning this one. It's a great tip!

Are you allowed to bring a garment bag as a carry-on on united flights? Have a wedding coming up and hate to check baggage.

We usually fly with United to WDW. Never had an issue with my carry on wheelie bag before. In fact it's way smaller (18 inch) than what many people drag on the plane with them and it fits easily in the bin on most planes. On our last trip in early April, after the Great Bag Crackdown of 2014, we had nobody even really look at carry ons as we boarded our flights going down. Coming home was way different! At MCO they had loads of people having to gate check their carry on bags. The reason was typically, "it looks pretty bulged out". It didn't seem to matter if it actually fit in the sizers because they weren't giving people a chance to prove that their bags were not oversized. Add that to a very crowded gate area on a Saturday afternoon, with flights coming/leaving from all available gates all at once and we had quite the circus going on. How did we fare? Well, our daughters ran afoul the "baggage gate cops" a few weeks earlier, so we basically chickened out and used Disney's RAC for our wheelie bags. Admittedly, they were overstuffed going home and really should have been checked anyway. ;)

I am wondering about the airplane out of the first (smaller) airport.

I had a connecting flight once that started on a smaller plane and they made me check my small (18'') roller bag as it would not fit that plane's overhead bins.

If the first flight is on United Express, that might be a concern for OP.

to pp with wedding dress, it will be placed with other things in over head bins. you will not be able to have it be the only thing in there. have no good ideas for getting it there safely

Yes. I'm guessing you are just talking about a nice outfit not a wedding dress. If you are carrying a wedding dress, speak with a flight attendant. They have closets on board where they can hang these.

Is the size limit now smaller than 9 x 14 x 22? That has been United's official size limit for many years.

If your new suitcase is bigger than that you might as well return it.

We are United frequent flyers. They have NOT changed their carry on size. It is still 9 x 14 x 22. However, recently (as of March 1, 2014) they have stated that they are "cracking down" on carry ons that are larger. YMMV. It's been my experience in the past few months that it's hit or miss -- sometimes the gate agents are sticklers for the rules and other times they don't seem to care. I would, however, make sure that my carry on fit the 9x14x22 size.

The United Express planes have significantly smaller over head compartments. My husband has a carryon that fits in a "regular" United over head, but not the Express ones.

In going to keep the bag but have elected to take another one with me. My duffle should fit as long as I don't overstuff it.

I was at a small airport in CA recently and the agent at the entrance to the security line made me put my carry-on in the sizer. I was flying SW whose carry-on limit is 10x16x24, and had just flown out the week before so I knew the size was fine, so I thought it was strange. Maybe it had something to do with the United crackdown?
