United 757-200 - Is there power?

The United website seems to indicate that there is no power available for laptops etc. on their 757-200 aircraft. Even in first class. Can that really be? Planning a trip to Disneyland from the east coast. I was hoping to entertain the kids using a laptop but the battery life is only about 3 hours.

That can easily be true, especially if it says so on the airlines website itself. Another place to look is www.seatguru.com.

In seat power isn't very common on domestic aircraft. The only one I've ever seen it on is an international 767 in business class.

Of course that can really be - I very rarely see power on domestic flights. I'd bring an extra battery (review security policies because there are restrictions on bringing uninstalled lithium ion batteries) or just assume you'll only have 3 hours of laptop time and bring other forms of entertainment.

You may have power, if the plane is a former Continental 757. They have plugs in the BusinessFirst section and some in economy. They also have plugs for all classes in the 757-200 ps, which only flies between SFO/LAX and JFK.

I agree that having power on domestic flights is rare. I suggest that you buy another laptop battery. There is no problem bringing an extra laptop battery through security.

Most (but not all) Continental Boeing 737-800/900 aircraft have electric power at all seats. This includes both domestic and international flights.

Oh, I should mention for those that are not familiar, that Continental Airlines and United Airlines are now merged.

On former United domestic 757's (that were not the special PS flights) I think they all used to have Empower plugs (DC like a cigarette lighter jack in a car but it uses a special plug) in First Class only, but some (many) had the empower removed. Some domestic 757's still have Empower. There is a thread on Flyertalk discussing it, Consolidated "EmPower (Laptop Power) on United Airlines" Thread [Merged]. As of a couple of years ago when the summary post in the thread was updated, about half of the 757's had Empower. It sounds like it's less than that now.

If you are on a domestic pre-merger United 757 in First Class you will either have no power or you will have Empower. You will not have a 115 VAC outlet like you do at home. If you want to gamble you could pick up Empower adapters for your device. You can get Empower cigarette lighter adapters that turn Empower ports into a car cigarette lighter format so you can plug your car adapters into them.

If your United 757 First Class flight has Empower there will be a little green light near the Empower port that comes on when the Empower port has power. If the green light is not on then the crew has to turn it on and not every crew member knows where the switch to turn it on is.

The only aircraft I've ever seen power was on a United 737-800. It was very new as it also had TVs in the headrests. The power was regular 3-prong just like a house in a housing under each seat.

Lots of UA planes have power outlets, often EMPower ports, but sometimes regular AC outlets. You see them a lot more in business/first than economy, although they are also available in economy on some aircraft (including the 757-200, 737-700, 767-200, etc.).

Here's the United page on seatguru. Looks like they have several different models of that plane, some with and some without power. Maybe you can figure out the model by going to United's website and looking the seating options on your flight?

I always use Seat Guru to check out this type of info. The tough part in this situation is that some appear to have power and some don't, so OP, I am going to guess that you won't know until you get on the plane. Best bet is to make sure the laptop is fully powered before takeoff...
