Unfathomable: Church Massacre

He had no reason to do this? We know his reasons. He said his reasons. Are we not supposed to dwell on them so people aren't made uncomfortable by this massacre, this terrorist act?

I am not trying to argue, I don't care what he said. That is no reason to do this.

Ugh. Straight-up assassinated a state senator. Definitely an act of terrorism. Am very glad they got the shooter, at least.

OP here.

I know people have strong reactions to this, as did I.

I added this to the OP:

Would like to avoid this thread becoming political so we can not have it shut down or be able to start another, and we can continue to follow details of the case. Thanks

Is the gun control thing what's being referred to as political? Gun control is a red herring in this particular instance, in my opinion. But racism is an indisputable factor, and if we're talking about the event, it's going to be discussed.

Yeah, because that would stop someone deranged enough to kill 9 innocent people. Sorry, I'm not being rude\crude, but a person capable of doing something this horrendous is going to find a way no matter what.

Do not agree and either do many Americans. We have become way too desensitized to shooting sprees. Much rather hold tight to the Second Amendment.

I'd guess that just as many Americans are in the opposite camp.

I'm not getting into that on this thread though.

I like Pea a lot so I will respect her wishes here.

I hope the victims' families find peace and RIP the victims themselves.

If people want to debate guns and the second amendment, please go start another thread.

There is a lot more to talk about here than guns. Please.

In this particular instance, it seems like talking about gun control swings the focus away from the fact that it was a racially-motivated hate crime. I mean, South Carolina's gun laws may end up being relevant in this case, but at this moment the fact that the only flag not at half-mast at their state house is the Confederate flag is pretty freaking awful: http://www.vox.com/2015/6/18/8803661/charleston-sc-shooting-confederate-flag-statehouse

"The shooting evoked painful memories of other attacks. Black churches were bombed in the 1960s when they served as organizing hubs for the Civil Rights movement, and burned by arsons across the South in the 1990s. Others survived shooting sprees.

This particular congregation, which formed in 1816, has its own grim history: A founder, Denmark Vesey, was hanged after trying to organize a slave revolt in 1822, and white landowners burned the church in revenge, leaving parishioners to worship underground until after the Civil War."

"[Pastort]Pinckney, 41, was a married father of two who became the youngest member of the South Carolina state House when he was elected as a Democrat at 23.

"He never had anything bad to say about anybody, even when I thought he should," State House Minority leader Todd Rutherford told The Associated Press. "He was always out doing work either for his parishioners or his constituents. He touched everybody."
