We are staying off site for the first time in a timeshare. Since we have a kitchen and a car, we will be stocking up at Sam's Club and Publix. So my question is: Do I take the time the first night there to make up some PB&Js for the freezer or do I buy a box of uncrustables (18 for about $10).

For those of you who have brought either or both to the parks, what was your experience? Soggy mess or convenient snack?

Thanks!

OOOOhhh, I answered first! :lmao:

We did the UnCrustables for a Bzz Campaign and DS absolutely loved them. He said the bread was softer than regular bread. Which I think he might be onto something. I have one of those sandwich squishers and when I do pb&j the bread usually cracks. These stayed nice and tidy. He didn't mention anything about soggy. Ate them up like nobody's business.

The main downside to them is, depending on the age of the kids, they're not a meal, they're a snack.

You can definately make them cheaper, sure. But naw, I'd buy.

Honestly, I think those uncrustable things are disgusting.

We make our own and here's why: we use whole-grain bread, low-sugar jam, and "nothing but peanuts" peanut butter. Same basic idea, but healthier and probably cheaper too.

I would also make my own for same reason as Teresa. If your at a timeshare and just making pb&j then you could make fresh daily and no soggy mess to worry about. You could also pick up (if you don't already have) the Mickey shaped egg cooker to make Mickey sandwiches. We use that because the Mickey cookie that we bought at WDW is too big for the bread we use.

Uncrustables now come in whole-grain white bread, which is not obviously the best option since its not 100% whole grain, but at least its a step up. My kids love them and I've been known to sneak them now and again, yummy! Beats messing with bread which can go moldy or jelly which can spill and messy sticky knives making sandwiches. Anyway, thats my vote.

I regularly buy the Aldi brand of uncrustables. $1.99 for 4 sandwiches & my DD loves them. They are fast & easy to grab in a rush.

For everyday home use I would not spend the money on the Smuckers brand, and 2 out of 5 of us won't eat the uncrustables at all. My son will only eat home-made PBJ on wheat bread. My DD doesn't like "peanut butter & yucky sandwiches" as she calls them, but she will dip apples in PB at home.

For a snack in the park, I would bring uncrustables for those of us who would eat them, they are still cheaper than most snacks you can buy there, but I would need something different for the 2 who don't like them.

My kids love them, I think they're gross. Pampered Chef sells a thing that makes the same shape, but even with fresh bread mine crack too. Someone mentioned that earlier
I'd do the uncrustables.

question about the uncrustables...if i pack them to travel (will be flying) and when i get to the resort i put them in the refrigerator..will they be good? can they last a few days in the refrig?

thanx,

my son and i really like them..a great snack..

If you decide to buy them, do not buy the Sam's Club brand (Members Mark, I think). They taste horrible!! We threw away a whole box because they were yucky. Go with the Uncrustables brand if you're going to buy.

I'd make my own, but I have some very picky PB&J eaters(plus I'm too cheap to buy uncrustables anyway). To keep the bread from getting soggy you can put peanut butter on both slices of bread, then the jelly(or in the case of my DS and DH strawberry preserves) on the peanutbutter the peanut butter keeps the jelly from making the bread soggy.

I have 2 of these. My son loves the uncrustables but I won't buy them unless we are going on a trip and I need the convenience and then it is considered a treat. They have different kinds now - strawberry or grape jam and grilled cheese.

I have never eaten one but I find I have to get the family size (rounded top) brand named bread. The store brands don't work and don't overload them - they crack if you do.

I would get them - if you are staying offsite just make a grocery run when you arrive and all should be good. :)

Have fun!

They actually 2 more kinds. Just peanut butter and honey/peanut butter. ;)

OP - I work for Publix and we often have uncrustables go on sale bogo. :thumbsup2 So check out the ad before you come down.

They also sell them in the parks/food courts. 1.50 I think each... can't remember, but I know I've seen them listed on allears.

We did bring them ourselves one year. If they end up in the bottom of your bag they can get squished up. But my kids ate them just fine all the same.

I think - it's been a while since I bought any - they're best within twelve hours, but good for several days, after being thawed.

May I ask why you would make the PB&J ahead and freeze them? I'm a PB&J addict. I take it for lunch most days of the week, and always did as a kid, too! I just make mine the night before and toss it in a sandwich box or baggie in the fridge for the next morning. (I'm too lazy to get up early enough to make it in the morning.) I found that you can fit 2 sandwiches in one Glad brand sandwich box when we went on a canoe trip last year. Perhaps you could make some sandwiches, put them in boxes, and toss them in your bag. Then they won't get smooshed.

I've never had uncrustables, but they have them as an option for our school breakfast. They seem pretty small.

We love the uncrustables at our house -- I like them, too. :goodvibes

I've brought them in the plane before and had no issues with them. We've had no issues with them thawing out. You want them thawed out in order to eat them anyhow. :thumbsup2 Unless, of course, you like them frozen, but i find them a little difficult to eat that way. ;)

In the future return them. Sam's has a money back guarantee on their food.
