Unconventional Woman in Spaceship Earth? Your thought....

Here is an interesting article about women in computing.

There's really not much doubt that the number of women in the computing industry is much smaller than the number of men, personal anecdotes aside.

And isn't that picture at the top great??! I don't know what I like best: the computer, her huge hairdo or the outfit.

Oh, heck, here's the picture:

Women were just enetering the workforce in the 70s and 80s? Huh??

i don't see anything wrong with it - it was the style back then.

can't have a secton decated to those HUGE computers and then put the people in 2011 clothes - itt wouldn't fit.

like putting a 1920's flapper on someone in the Roman sceens.

they have to stick with what was happening in each era not how someone in 2011 would look at it and say - disrespectful.

the fact that women working in such high placed positions is very respectful

and the boots are those go-go boots. pretty much every women owned at least 1 pair ;)

Looking at picutres of my mom from that time (and she worked in computers at that time) the outfit does not seem out of place at all.

Oh wow, this tread. popcorn::

Me, I'm distracted by the antlers on the shaman in the first scene. Everyone knows that the ancient people of Lascaux wore giant shiny capes painstakingly made of reindeer hide and mica flecks. :rotfl:

Anyways my issue is that every time I see this I think the same thing: More or less by the clothing, I’m thinking the time era being depicted is the 70’s. First it’s great that they put a woman in this professional role with her “very official” lab coat during this era in time; however, do they have to demean her by putting her in a very short mini-skirt and these vinyl platform knee high boots while at her “professional” job? I mean her outfit and the way she looks is so out of place from the setting. It’s difficult enough to know that during this time when computers were just starting and like in all these professional settings in the 70’s and even 80’s women were just entering the workforce. Difficult enough to fit in, they put a female in this very important position yet they mess it up by her outfit.

I agree with you. The outfit really doesn't fit the setting at all.

However, I'm surprised that this is what bothered you (bear in mind, it bothers me). I think that "the pretty princesses needing to be saved by guys" would be more controversial. Disney really does place a value on physical appearance, in general.

why is that surprising?

seen a cover of a mag lately? everythings airbrushed

and the princess in tangled didn't really need help - just a little push to say it was ok for her to leave - after all she had been brain washed but she kicked butt on her own and didn't need a knight in shining armour

It may not fit the setting in your opinion, but it's historically correct. I graduated from college with a degree in accounting in the 70's. The miniskirt and boots would have been an OK for work - pants weren't allowed. But I always laugh at the fact that we dressed like that.

Actually, I'm always more struck by the fact that I think she looks just like Uhura(sp?) from Star Trek that by her outfit!

This look/outfit doesn't bother me one bit. I'm 50+

What really bothers me is the "loud/obnoxious behavior" in an office setting.
With intimidated/scared/managers that are tolerant or intimated...I really
don't get it.:confused3 .

The manipulative, aggressive attitude I see is way more objectionable to
me and some of my co-workers than anything else.

Spoken like someone that didn't live as an adult in the late 60's, early 70's. This was the Disco era.
No it wasn't. This was the Summer of Love, the Vietnam Era, the Woodstock Generation. The Disco Era came much later (mid to late 70's).

As far as work clothes are concerned, the mini-skirt is one major reason that women began wearing pants to work, and why pants were allowed. It was a tough row to hoe, though. After a while, past the era of the scene in question, women began to realize that (1) they wouldn't be taken seriously in mini-skirts, and (2) they were spending way too much time worried about how they were sitting instead of focusing on the job at hand.

I remember going to work in New England in the early '80's and being told, during the winter, that it was inappropriate for me to wear a pantsuit to work. It would have been fine (same material, same cut) if I had been wearing a skirt. I told them that I would wear a skirt to work on a freezing January day if the manager would wear shorts. Then he could tell me that I had to be cold to be appropriate! It was never mentioned again.

Actually, I'm always more struck by the fact that I think she looks just like Uhura(sp?) from Star Trek that by her outfit!
Agreed - and don't forget, Uhura wore mini-skirts & go-go boots as part of her uniform!

Living proof of the adage that everything will offend somebody.

It doesn't bother me -- having lived thru the '70's, I find it completely appropriate to the era.

Apparently, it bothers you enough that you took the effort to point it out here on the boards. Duly noted, thanks for sharing.
