OK, some of you dont know this.... but, I work for a law enforcemnt agency in MI....I am on the Highway all the time... This happened to me the other day......get your kleenex ready....
I was on a motorist asst. when a lady pulled up to me and said "you need to go back north and help a little old man out...he is broke down......he must be 85 years old....please go help him".....So, off I go....
I found a 1995 Dodge Caravan with the four ways on, hood up....little old man jumps out...I get out of my car and tell him to please stay in your car....I ask him what is wrong......he tells me his van keeps overheating....wont start.....So I get the info. and call him a wrecker....
This guy is 90 years old, clothes are a mess....yellow stuff all over them.....I look in the pass. seat and see a huge tub of cheese balls (like cheese curls)..he's got that stuff all over him.......I just chuckled.....
The van is packed full of stuff.....I mean everything......I ask him where he is headed....he said "back home to Grand Rapids, I'm orig. from there, been retired living in Florida for 20 years". He asks me to stay there with him until the wrecker comes....I tell him sure.....no problem......He goes on to tell me he is moving back to GR to live with one of his kids....he had 6 kids, 19 grand children and 42 great grand children....He proceeds to tell me about his life.......politics, religion, unions, young people etc....just a great guy.....he had a trailer in the Tampa area...sold it all .....(Basically, he is coming home to die).
He gave me a phone number for a daughter in GR, I called her and when she answered I told her who I was and where I worked, she started screaming.."is he all right"?....I told her he just broke down....he would be home late..I let her talk to him........(all on my cell of course, my depart. cant afford squat)
He then tells me you know why I have lived so long?? He then tells me because of his wonderful wife......she died 10 years ago......He reaches in to his shirt pocket and pulls out some papers, thumbs threw them and locates a photo of his wife...he holds it up and says "Isn't she beautiful", he then looks at it and starts crying.......he told me she passed about a week after the photo was taken.......man, it even got to me.........I had to go back to my car for a minute.....big tough guy cant be getting all flubbery on the road!!
We talked a bit longer and then the wrecker arrived.......I pulled the wrecker driver aside and said "hey, this old guy is going home to die, take it easy on him......he asured me he would be fare with him......
The old guy got out of his van to get in the wrecker, he came up to me and gave me a hug.....said "thanks for staying with me".......
You just dont see stuff like that anymore.......
