Uber from SNA?

I have paid $19 and $24 for rides to/from Tropicana. It took 16 minutes to the airport. :)
Oh, that's not bad pricing, and especially for the two of us! And the timing? That's awesome! Hopefully that will be close on a Saturday morning after landing at 11 a.m.! Not sure how long it will take to get thru the airport there, and out to the pick up area, but hopefully not long! Wanna get to the park, we're so excited! Thank you, amyg1975!
Both sites have fare calculators: https://www.uber.com/cities/orange-county/ and https://www.lyft.com/cities/orange-county. Keep in mind, there are times when surge pricing or prime time is in effect.

Great, thanks for those links, row! Yes, will have to remember that! Hopefully our trip in on Sat, arriving at 11 a.m. and the next weekend, leaving at 2 p.m. will not be super busy times! Will probably use again on the Monday of our trip, down to Newport Beach and back to In and Out on the way back, so that should be okay, too, I would think.

Just returned from DLR. I downloaded both Lyft and Uber, but Uber gave us a superior discount so we went with them. FYI, here is what we got and what we paid:

SNA to Grand Californian Hotel: Uber XL for 5 people. Cost = $34; new rider discount $22 (when you first sign up you can use this: code is feeling22). Final cost = $12. Very new Kia Sorrento. Driver friendly and fun. Arrived to pick us up right outside baggage claim within 7 minutes, helped with luggage and super easy.

GCH to SNA: Uber XL. Cost = $31.78; used new rider discount again (daughter's phone) for a final cost of $9.78. Brand new Toyota Sienna, stocked with waters! Driver courteous and easy going. Arrived in 7 minutes, helped with luggage, drop off easy as could be.

I'm sold! As nice or nicer than a taxi, cheaper, and so easy. Lyft had a "first ride free" promo but it automatically uploaded a $50 discount that gives you $10 off on each of 5 rides. Don't think I'll be using it again before most of those expire. Uber's discount gave us $44 off instead of $20 so the choice was easy.

Another note about both uber and lyft: drivers AND riders are rated on a 5-star scale, the drivers by the riders and the riders by the drivers. I didn't get the notice to rate the driver on our first leg and didn't even know you were supposed to until I saw it on the second leg. If you don't get a notice to rate the driver, you can do it from your emailed receipt.

When you set up for pickup, the drivers can see how you as a rider are rated and as I understand it, that can determine who offers to pick you up and possibly how long you will have to wait. One of the things that will lower your rating is not tipping, even though tipping is officially unnecessary, so I think that's something to be aware of.

Wow, that's awesome, thanks for all the details and costs! It sounds great! Did you get a referral to Lyft and Uber? Thanks for that code, is that feeling22 code different than a referral from someone you know who has it or same? Just confused if I use that code and a referral or how that part works. Do you think the code would still work in May? Sounds like a great deal, and DD25 will be able to do with her phone as well! I'm thinking we might use both because we are gonna take a trip to Newport Beach on our day off from parks so we could get a deal then, as well! How long was your trip to your hotel? Actually the beach might be a little farther I think so I'll have to figure out which to use for which trip, lol.

Hmm, thanks for the heads up in that ratings info, and the tipping. How much of a tip do you think is necessary? Sounds like it wouldn't effect your first trip since they wouldn't know if you tipped or not yet, when deciding on your first pick up, wait time or whatever. That's odd that they rate on tipping even though it's not supposed to be necessary.

Thanks so much for taking your time to share all that info, DizMe, I really appreciate it! It's definitely very helpful and will be saving us some money!

I didn't use a referral because I didn't know anyone to ask for one. I live in a small town where no one uses it, but Lyft gives you a referral from someone when you sign up so some unknown gets the credit, I guess! If you have a referral I assume that it will work in addition to the new rider promo code but I am not sure about that. I found Uber very easy to converse with via email so you could ask them. Lyft was quick to answer my emails but didn't correct the situation with the 'first ride free' code--the rep added another $10 to my account but as I said, I already had 5 of those and I won't use another one. Their promo said you get the first ride free up to $50 but according to the rep, the app automatically downloaded the promo for $10 off on 5 rides and they didn't change it for me, just added a 6th. I did tell them that I could get a better deal through Uber but it didn't help.

I found it a little confusing to download the app and use codes on Lyft, so I tried it through my home computer and that was worse. Uber was a lot easier and I could do it from my phone with no trouble. I didn't find Lyft to be too user-friendly with the promo codes etc. but Uber was pretty straight-forward. The codes can change/expire so I wouldn't download it until you are closer to your trip. Lyft said that once I'd downloaded the app I wasn't eligible for the first ride free because I already had an account. I had put in the right code but the app used a different one and they wouldn't adjust it, so anyway, I'd hold off on downloading the apps until your trip is close.

It took us about 20 minutes to get from the airport to the hotel (10:45 AM on Tues) and about 25 from hotel to airport at 8 PM the next night , though the traffic was really light on Wed. We seemed to take a little different route back and it was cheaper but took a little more time.

I didn't yet know about the rating thing but I tipped $5 on the first trip (there were 5 of us) and $4 on the way back because that's all I had besides a $20. I usually tip a dollar per person/bag up to $5 for taxis between SNA/DLR so I just did the same.

I'm not sure how Lyft works but with Uber, you request a specific type of ride (x for regular, XL for larger parties etc) when you do the pickup request. My daughter setup for our hotel pickup while I went to the restroom but forgot to request an XL and the default is regular so we had to call and reschedule for an XL. Cancelling is frowned on by the drivers, of course, so that's another thing to be aware of! Luckily it was only a couple of minutes, but I felt bad. Instead of canceling I called the driver and he said he was driving a Scion, could only hold 4 so he cancelled it from his end, which hopefully is better than us cancelling (ratings ding!). The app gives you the first name of your driver, his/her picture, a picture of the vehicle and the license plate number so you can tell when they pull up. It also shows you their progress en route! There's a little car moving along on the screen. We watched on the app as our driver negotiated the airport and drove up to where we were :) SNA has each section marked with a big number so they know exactly where to pick you up, which is great! You and your daughter should both be able to get the new discount for each app.

You can use the price estimator (linked in a prior post somewhere) to get an idea how much it will cost to go to the beach.

Good luck and have fun!

Thank you, DizMe, for all the extra and very useful info you have shared here! I really appreciate you taking your time to do this. I'm definitely saving these posts to refer to for our trip to DL coming in May! I appreciate you explaining your experiences, definitely helps since I have no idea how it all works and don't like going into a situation where I don't know how things should be working, especially on top of being in a strange new city. This all helps put me so much more at ease! No more worries about transportation!

And thanks, I think we'll have an awesome time!

It took us 22 minutes on Wednesday morning at 9am (a little bit of a slow down at one point), yet only cost $17.11. On Saturday morning when we arrived, it was a few minutes faster, but cost $19. We love Uber!

Thanks for this information. I'm usually not traveling with 5 people so next time I'll have an idea from someone who has done it recently how much it will cost to use Uber X instead of XL. Thanks!

ETA: That's funny about the cost difference going and coming. Ours was the opposite!

Does anyone know how many people UberXL can seat? How would you know ahead of time? Or even Uber SUV? We will have 7 passengers plus the driver so only an 8 passenger vehicle will work...might be better to use a Taxi Van.
Thanks!

Thanks!

Uber XL can seat 6 passengers...but I can tell ya depending on the car it can be a TIGHT 6 seater with little to no room for luggage depending on the car. Uber SUV can cram in 7 adults into a Suburban, 6 if row 2 is captains chairs instead of a bench seat. No guarantees.

I am devout Uber user but if I was arriving at the airport with a party that size I would just hop in a Taxi van as much as I hate Taxis now.

Thank You So much for your information! We've never used Uber or Lyft - and will be traveling into SNA this summer... on the way to GCH... so this is perfect. I will make sure to upload the app before we leave. There will be 3 of us, but with 3 large suitcases and a couple of carry-on's probably the XL service makes sense, just to have more room.

:)

Glad it's helpful for you, too! I've never used or really considered Uber till others shared this great info here and we're excited to try them on our DL trip! Seems like it should be nice and easy, and inexpensive, as well, which is all great. Hope your Uber experience goes well, too, and you all have a great trip to DL/GCH!

Anyone have any last minute tips? Do you need an XL if you have 2 small kids and 2 adults with car seats and one stroller? Also any promo codes we can use? Thanks!!

Could you fit in a Prius? That is the question I ask myself when deciding between X and XL.

We always had sedans pick us up, and then last time we had a Prius! We barely got two pieces of luggage in the trunk, and the stroller had to ride in the back seat with us.

Do you think we'd be safe, size-wise, with XL if it's 2 adults, 1 toddler in a car seat, 3 large/medium suitcases, 1 smaller suitcase? (Yes, we pack a lot! HA!)
