We'll be on the road 12/17-12/18 and since we'll be on I65/I24 (Kentucky/Tennessee) at night heading toward I75. I was wondering what is the typical road conditions this time of year? Fog, ice, should I be worried about snow? Do they keep this stretch of road well salted and plowed?
THANKS:cool2:

a few years ago i drove down to disney on the return trip we hit a ice storm coming out of chattanooga heading north we experienced the bad wintry conditions unfortunately, the scene quickly went from pretty to ugly fast we were stuck with no way out we got lucky after many tries to find a room for the night and expected to be alright by morning many hours later traffic did not move trucks were in the same spot from the night before the roads had about 2 inches of ice i never seen a salt truck! finally the sun came out and the roads started to melt with cars coming in the up the opposite side of the road not only were the mountains virtually powerless, so was much of the rest of chattanooga i have since learned when driving in the winter watch and listen the weather reports if it gets bad stop early a delay getting to your destination is much safer

If there is snow, the stretch of I-24 you're on could be bad. More than likely, if there any bad conditions, the roads will simply be wet from rain, but anything can (and does) happen in Ky/TN this time of year.

I-24 is definitely prone to fog, and snow too if there is precipitation in the area. Be sure to follow weather forecasts for Monteagle, TN which is at the top. If conditions are supposed to be poor use I-65 between Nashville and Birmingham.

As expected I will be at the mercy of the weather Gods so my plan "B" will be I75. So as not to add more driving time I would have to enter I75 in central Ohio. As I go through Kentucky/Tennessee via I75 would I expect to see the same weather conditions as if I was going via I65/ I24 through Kentucky/Tennessee? I'm not sure if the terrain plays a big part when comparing one route to the other.

The weather usually travels west to east. If there is a storm front, simply watch. If you can stay in front of it, use I75. If it can pass before you travel, use I65.

Most of I75 through Ky is three lane. The mountains in the extreme southern part of Ky/Northern Tn could make driving through snow/ice fun.

More than likely you'll be ok, but simply start watching the forecast a couple days out.
