I would do a comparison between full blown Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. I have Photoshop Elements 7 (got 8 but it isn't installed yet) and can't imagine I would need to spend the extra hundreds of dollars for Photoshop. Everything I need is in PSE!!

You can check out my Photobucket and see what I am able to do with PSE7!

Your best bet is to check out Adobe homepage http://www.adobe.com/. Hopefully, that will give you the info you'll need to decide which Photoshop to use. I personally use Photoshop CS4 and am very happy with it. Thus far I have learned it on my own pretty easily. There are a ton of tutorials out there on the web. But that's just my opinion. I'm sure there are others that like Elements better. Also, you'll want to take cost into consideration.

This is my comparison of the 2.

PSE
Cost: Around $100
Designed for: The home user/amateur photographer
Learning Curve: Fairly steep.

PS - CS4
Cost: $600+
Designed for: Professional Photogs/Graphic Designers
Learning Curve: Steep, especially for the more advanced functions.

PSE will do about 80% of what PS will do. Plug-ins are available that will get it up near 85%. Most of the brushes, shapes and textures available for PS will work with PSE.

My recommendation: Start with PSE. 95% of what you learn in PSE is directly transferable to PS. PS can do everything PSE can do and more but many of the functions are combined in PSE for ease of use. PS has much more flexibility but that comes at the price of added steps to do what is one step in PSE. Some of the money you save can be used to buy plug-ins and a subscription to Photoshop Elements Techniques (photoshopelementsuser.com) which is an excellent newsletter/website with many great tutorials and other goodies.

Also, Adobe periodically offers PSE users a discount, as much as 50%, off the cost of PS.
