Women driving teen vampire adaptation's buzz
By ANNE THOMPSON
Summit Entertainment is expecting a large turnout for 'Twilight.'
• Comic-Con: Twilight Pandemonium

By any measure, "Twilight" seems an unlikely candidate for a blockbuster. Produced by Summit Entertainment for $37 million with no name stars, the film is a B-movie of indefinable genre, part horror, part fantasy and part chick flick.
While young men typically drive horror films, women are driving the "Twilight" train. But they're notoriously difficult to track and measure.

Even so, most people in the biz believe that when "Twilight" opens on Nov. 21 its numbers will be huge. While Summit has ample reason to be optimistic given passionate anticipation for its adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's bestseller Fandango.com reports that the pic has sold out nearly 100 showtimes for opening day across the country -- it is worried about setting expectations too high.

A $30 million opening (opposite the Disney animated comedy "Bolt") is a modest estimate, but "Twilight" could exceed $50 million.

Under pressure from exhibs, Summit plans a wide opening on more than 5,000 screens. But that suggests there might be some anxiety about whether the movie will play beyond the target core. The film's Nov. 8-10 press junket -- attended by a largely skeptical male press contingent -- should offer an early glimpse at the pic's broader prospects, but the pic has plenty of pluses going for it:

It's based on a huge bestseller. "Twilight" is the first tome in the second-most successful book series since "Harry Potter." The four books in the series have sold 17 million copies in 37 countries, mostly to femmes -- not just teens but older women as well. The series has built a passionate following all over the world, due to Meyer's own grassroots marketing efforts, as well as some 350 fan sites. The official "Twilight" website has had more than 8 million visits.
In "Twilight," high school everygirl Bella moves to the Pacific Northwest to live with her small-town sheriff father when her mother remarries. There, she meets and falls in love with the charismatic vampire Edward, who belongs to a special coven that eschews human blood. But that doesn't mean they aren't tempted, and part of "Twilight's" appeal is the romantic appeal of a lover who is both protective and withholding: Will they kiss, have sex, or will he suck her blood? In April 2006, ex-Paramount vice chairman Rob Friedman and his Summit production chief Eric Feig scooped up the property when it was put into turnaround by MTV Films before the book hit it big. As Summit watched "Twilight" and its sequels move up the charts, they saw the wisdom of sticking close to Meyer's text and brought "Dexter" writer Melissa Rosenberg and director Catherine Hardwicke ("Thirteen," "Lords of Dogtown") aboard.

Because it's not a takeoff on any existing movie genre, "Twilight" feels fresh, even if its hybrid nature makes marketers nervous. Summit is spending more than $30 million on prints and ads and booking theaters without being able to check against an existing playbook. "Twilight" charts new ground, which forced Summit to fly by the seat of its pants. "It's really its own thing," says one Summit marketing exec.

Robert Pattinson is stirring fan fever. After Meyer anointed Brit actor Pattinson ("Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire") as Edward on her site during production, the fans swiftly accepted him. When he hit Hall H at Comic-Con last July some 5,000 women, many of whom had camped overnight in line, screamed as if they were at Beatles concert.
Screaming fans punctuated the screening of eight minutes of footage of Edward and Bella at the Rome Film Fest (where 3,000 tickets sold out in 20 minutes) and again at Spain's Sitges Film Fest.

Pattinson is No. 5 on IMDb Pro's StarMeter, higher than both DiCaprio and Brad Pitt.

Women are starving for romance. Hollywood doesn't make movies like "Love Story" or "Reds" anymore, partly because it's hard to pull off sincerity in our cynical age. Auds these days would rather laugh at the weepy goofball in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" than take love seriously.
The studios are scared of romantic dramas because they are execution-dependent and must rely on positive reviews. Femme filmgoers have recently propelled "Sex in the City" and "Mamma Mia!" to big opening weekends, it takes established brands to reach those numbers.

It's about vampires. Arguably, vampires have never been more popular than they are now, from the "Underworld" film trilogy to HBO's "True Blood."
Vampires add commerciality to "Twilight," partly because they turn "romance" into the more accessible "romantic fantasy."

Significantly, vampires also appeal to men.

Summit is hoping the film's extended action sequences -- a highflying vampire baseball game and rogue vampires are highlighted in the second "Twilight" trailer -- will lure men, too.

Summit isn't cutting any corners. The year-old distrib needs a hit, and is pulling out the stops to generate one.
Friedman admits Summit has "grabbed a tiger by the tail," and its execs very much want to maximize this chance, because it will keep them in business amid tough economic times.

To maximize its upside, Summit sent Hardwicke back for reshoots on the film, including Edward and Bella's first kiss and the book's big reveal of Edward's pale skin sparkling in the sunlight.

The distrib has been pushing this movie hard since April. The pic's first teaser trailer hit big on MySpace and is now closing in on 4 million views.

While Oprah didn't jump at doing a "Twilight"-dedicated show, Ellen DeGeneres begged for it -- which was fine with Summit, as she has a younger audience. Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella, are booked on the talkshow circuit, including the "Today" show. In November and December, more than 50 magazine features are planned, including Vanity Fair.

To foster the pic's youth marketing, Summit enlisted MTV.com early on, supplying ad materials, art, trailers and clips. The site crashed when it posted first-look cast photos. Advance clips from the soundtrack and the Paramore single "Decode" are generating millions of streams on Meyer's website and MySpace.

Summit is also aggressively aiming to expand the pic's appeal beyond the 13-30 femme base to older women and young men. To do that, it's taking the cast around to 15 Hot Topic mall events around the country.

"Twilight" will open day-and-date in 10 markets around the world, and broaden out in December and January.

Needless to say, Summit has nailed down rights to the three "Twilight" sequels and has the actors committed.

"We're poised," says Friedman. "We'll make our decision on Nov. 22."

I don't doubt that the movie will be a monetary success. I bet it beats its $37 million budget just in opening weekend.

But will it be any good?

SSB agrees, you have to figure that it will have a monster opening weekend, but the quality of film will then depend on if they then get repeat viewings and word-of-mouth marketing.

We'll all hope not another Eragon, as have to agree that was ugly! :)

What did Rob say about New Moon in that clip? I tried watching it but it was too long for me to check out at work :surfweb: :rolleyes1

I feel like I've already seen the movie with all the clips and pictures that have been released. I know people love Rob, but I don't think he's a great Edward. From the clips I've seen, his accent seems to be all over the place. Thirteen was amazing and so was Lords of Dogtown, but Hardwicke also directed another movie (about the birth of christ) that was NOT good. I'm going to see the movie anyway and am taking my mom, best friend and neice but I'm not convinced its going to be great.
I agree with you, I think it will have a monster opening weekend. I just hope its good enough that it does not completely die the next.

It was his favorite out of the series. I don't want to say anymore than that in case someone hasn't read that far yet.

I know this is the wrong place to put this, but there was another trailer on last night during The Simpsons. My confidence in this film is at an all time low and it is a total bummer. The more I see, the worse it looks. I really did adore the books, but blech! The special effects look very Crouching Tiger in some scenes, and just silly in others (particularly anytime a vamp is running).

I PRAY that like with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, that they are still tweaking the effects for the final film and what we see in the trailers isn't the be all end all.

I'm not expecting Oscar performances, or an Oscar caliber film (and I think it is extremely eye-roll worthy that Stephenie Meyer would say that Robert Pattinson's performance was OScar worthy in her eyes), but I would like an entertaining film that doesn't make me cring throughout with cheese, and right now it looks VERY Velveeta.

Maybe...maybe if I set my expectations low enough, the film will blow me away?

I think you're expectations are a little too high. I have no expectations at all and I'm fine with everything that we've seen so far. I don't particularly care if the special effects are good or bad, that isn't what makes a film, especially not Twilight in which special effects are a minimum part of the story. As long as the relationship between Edward and Bella is captured in a good way I will be fine with the film, and so far I have seen nothing to make me doubt this.

The only thing I'm really worried about is what we haven't seen, the sparkling effect. That's a very important moment to me and it would kind of suck if it looked terrible, but then again, it was an incredibly cheesy thing to start with so I'm not really expecting much either. I'll just have to wait and see.

I just have one word...ERAGON.

I don't think Eragon had half the hype that Twilight does, at least I never saw any of it...:confused3

Just to let everyone know, the San Francisco event today was cancelled due to HUGE attendance of over 3,000 and little to no security.

That's a shame but I can't say as I'm too surprised. The one that will be near me (King of Prussia) is being heavily hyped at other local Hot Topic stores. There is no way I'd go anywhere near there! My teenagers say the same thing even though they'd really like to see him, too.

Here's the article. BTW, I always thought it was a terrible idea to do this in the HT stores, those places are tiny! If they had gone to a larger venue they could've avoided all the incidents.

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Police in San Francisco had to struggle to control a crowd of around 3,000 people who gathered at San Francisco's Stonestown Galleria Monday morning for the chance to see an actor who is very popular among the teenage set.

Police were forced to cancel the event, after the crowds grew out of control.

Teenagers, and their families had come from as far as Hawaii, Los Angeles and Arizona hoping to get a glimpse of Robert Pattinson, the 22-year-old British actor who played Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter movies. He now stars in “Twilight,” a vampire movie that is based on a very popular young adult book.

Around 200 to 500 people were expected to line up this morning to buy a wristband when the mall opened, that would allow them back inside the mall at 6 p.m. for a t-shirt signing at the Hot Topic store. Thousands showed up.

”After I got trampled I got back up there, but it was really scary cause I couldn’t breathe, because everyone kept pushing,” said fan Erica Martin.

One girl reportedly had her nose broken as a result of being crushed up against the front doors to the mall. Another girl fainted because she was unable to breathe while being pressed by the crowd.

The line to get into the front of the mall stretched all the way around the block.

YOWSA!

Surely an indication of the box office receipts to come upon opening... Watch it do 50 million!

If the film is good (fingers crossed) you could see it having good run of multiple viewings, much like Titanic did. Um... have to admit that SSB saw it SEVEN times at the theater... ha-ha!

Haha, same here. I'm guessing it'll do between 50 or 60 million first weekend, hopefully more! I know I'll be seeing it 5 times whether I like it or not, mainly because I want to see New Moon on the big screen.

HOLY MOLY!!! I guess that makes up my mind for tomorrow - going nowhere near the Dallas Galleria, LOL!!!

Hey Neighbor. I'm working in Collegeville.
I work with a 21 year old. She is going to KoP at 4am with her friends to get in line for the bracelets. I told her to bring me back of pic of him.

Might be wise, but I'll bet that they react quickly to this and do much better job in the future... hate to get negative press/cancels when you are are on a PR junket! :)

, at least I never saw any of it...:confused3

My only "expectation" at this point is that the film is going to be cheezy, melodramatic and likely terrible. I am HOPING it's good.

Good special effects lend themselves to the film in a subtle way, wherein you believe what you are seeing and it enhances the film. Badly done effects (like what I have seen done in Twilight) make you go...oh yeah...this is all just wires and CG. And can easily ruin the experience.

I absolutely doubt the quality of Edward and Bella's relationship due to what so far looks like Kristen Stewart having attended the "Mannequin Skywalker" school of acting that Hayden Christiansen attended before ruining Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

As for Eragon, you are right. It was not nearly the crushing phenomenon that Twilight or Harry Potter are, but it IS huge (whether you read it or not). The film was embarrassingly bad and subsequent films based on the rest of the books were scrapped. So I do worry that we might not see the other books in film form, if Twilight is a critical bomb.

Man I sound like a negative Nelly. I really really want the movie to be good and to do well, and for the other books to be made into films. But just like the week leading up to election night, I am worried I might not get what I want.

This is so funny, yet very true. And I think in a lot of the pics released of twilight Rob looks exactly like Hayden....

I don't think Rob looks like Hayden at all...:scared:

Anyway, I like both Rob AND Kristen, but I've said that a million times before so I think everyone knows it by now.
