Okay, this might seem like a bit of a strange question, but...

Can you do twilight check-in and not drop off your bags? Can you just check-in at the desk, then do bag drop in the morning?

Not sure, to be honest. But if you wanna get checked in and keep your bags til the day of the flight, why not check-in online. You can then just line up at the bag drop desk on the morning of your flight. Just an alternative idea.

Sorry, I didn't make it clear in the first post, but because we are Special Assistance, we cannot all check-in online, which is why I wanted to know if this is possible.

I need to call Special Assistance anyway, but at the moment there are no seats available to pre-book, which really concerns me as we need to be sat next to mum. Hopefully, Special Assistance can either pre-book for us on medical grounds, or have a note put on our file so that we are together, but if they can't then I need to be able to check-in at the earlier possible moment with a real live person as they have to sort out the wheelchair and the assistance required here and in the States.

We will also need our bags overnight - there just isn't the room in our hand luggage to keep overnight things. Mum's medications - basically a shoe box full - take up most of her hand baggage space/allowance as it is! Hence, why I was hoping we could do twilight check-in, but without the bags, and just do bag drop in the morning.

The Virgin special assistance will be able to help you.
I can understand your concerns regarding sitting together, but don't forget that rows of seats are held back for Special assistance requirements (rows 21-23 for example) and do not show on the booking screens.

Special assistance also (AFAIR) has a special checkin desk at Gatwick where you can checkin.
Can you not hold back one suitcase for your overnight requirements and check the others in? it would save you problems of mobility in a crowded airport the next day, when you would only then have to checkin the held back bag.

Talk to SA, they will give you lots of help.

Thanks for all that information. I didn't realise there were rows kept back for SA, although I suppose I should have thought about that. That is certainly a relief to know! As long as we are together, I guess I can forego the luxuries of the bubble this time around!

Hadn't thought about keeping one suitcase back, although our trouble is, we only normally go out with two anyway. We come back with four/five (spares are hiding inside), but only go out with two! But it's definitely worth thinking about.
