There were a lot of characters whose deaths were unexpected, sad or even changed the show: Dale and Herschel on The Walking Dead, many on Game of Thrones and the Sopranos, Jack and William on This Is Us, ......

One that still gets me when I see it today is Colonel Henry Blake - MASH

And Chuckles the Clown - Mary Tyler Moore Show (just kidding!)

Phil Hartman's death required them to kill off Bill McNeil on my favorite sitcom of all time, NewsRadio with the added effect of losing all of his characters on The Simpsons. What a loss! The Simpsons also killed off Mrs. Krabappel when Marcia Wallace died. She had just found love with Ned Flanders too, giving him another major loss after his wife.
