Tutus?

My daughter (age 12) wants to wear a disney themed tutu at Disneyland...I know costumes are only allowed for those under age 9...is a tutu considered a costume or would she be allowed to wear one?

Hmm, I think a tutu will be fine. Maybe not a super poofy/long one! If she wore it as a skirt with leggins underneath I wouldn't immagine it would be a problem. I've had a look on etsy and have included a couple of links of tutu's and skirts for you to look at I have also included a link to sparkly running skirts that lots of people wear to the Disneyland marathons that could be an option also!

Please keep us updated, my DD will be 11 when we travel in December, and she is already as tall as some of the adults I work with, with a little girl love of DL so she is already disappointed she can't dress up. I would love to know how you go, and where you find a tutu from.

Thank you for the links...I believe it was a tutu she saw on Etsy she wanted to wear. I made up matching shirts for us all last year for our visit using designs made by creative and talented people on these boards, but this year she wants a tutu instead...

Thanks for posting those links! I was teasing DH and telling him I was going to wear a tutu while at DL, but after seeing the character themed tutus, I think I just may have to get one - they're too cute!

If you have a Joann's in your area, check out the clearance section. I saw Ariel & Tink inspired tutu kits for under $7. Good luck!

Wow...good to know this information. My DD will be (almost) 7 when we go in July, but I had no idea they weren't allowed to dress up after 9 and had this official age limit. We've been going to WDW and DL for years, how did I miss that???

"Official" may be too strong of a word. They want to prevent older teens and adults from dressing up. It's not a hardfast rule, and as long as they LOOK like a child it should be fine even if they are 10, 11, 12. And in any case tutus are not considered "costumes" for the most part. There are actually sites that give outfit ideas for adults to "dress like" a character without being in costume.

Tutus are allowed if they fall within their guidelines. If the tutu looks like a puffy skirt, it's okay. I have seen older girls, I'd say tweens, adding tulle to the bottom of shirts. Some of the common ones running around Disneyland have been Darth Vader and Minnie.

I have seen teens wearing the type of skirt that is comprised of net or tulle that is in long strips, that are gathered and then knotted around a simple elastic waistband. I've seen these skirts before elsewhere and they are really very nice.
In the case of the park, these girls were wearing their skirts over their jeans.

We saw several teens and even some adults wearing tutus with bike shorts or leggings under them on our trip the first week of June. No one seemed to be giving them any trouble about it.

The wording on the website has, IMO, softened quite a bit since a few years ago, but no matter what, that was for *costumes*. Like, costumes to look like Alice, or Aurora, etc.

Tutus aren't a proper costume (I don't think there's a single character that wears a tutu), so I doubt there will be any issue whatsoever. Except that if I wore one I'm sure I would tear the netting on the first ride I tried to get out of.

My DD retired her princess dresses on her 10th birthday, and has since put together quite a cute collection of "Disneybound" outfits. Check out google or pinterest for ideas. I even wore an orange tank top, denim capris, and a bright green flower in my hair (a la Goofy) on our last trip. It's a lot of fun!

The website specifies "adult" but does not say whether they mean actual adult or "Disney adult" which may lead to the conflicting viewpoints.

Yes! If you wear the tutu over jeans or leggings, and your top does not look like a character then you will be fine. A green tutu with a sparkly green tank top to represent Tinker Bell would be fine, but if you had wings that might raise questions. If you wear red with white polka dots but no mask, then you will look human and not like you are trying to be Minnie.

Last Sunday I saw a girl who had to be about 17 or so wearing one, along with wings in the back. Small wings, but still wider than her back was. I saw her over by Space Mountain so cast members obviously let her in like that. Very short Tutu which was a bit surprising. She was getting quite a few looks. So something to think about, the older the child is, the more looks they would get.
