Turkey Day Gang 2009

Thanks Karen,
Normally I don't obsess over "Formal" vs whatever for dinner dress on the ship, but this is Thanksgiving. My Dad is retired now and has always refused to wear a tie on vacation. I am pretty sure he will be allowed to eat with the grownups in an open necked shirt but do you think he'll want to go?

OOoooohhhh I should have a 18 month old neice by then. I am so looking forward to the itty bitty princess dresses. DD was too old for them by the time we started cruising.

One more thing, You should see the size of my suitcases :rotfl2: . Good thing I don't fly or I'd have to buy them seats.

Hi Patsy,

I think it's one of those "conformity" issues...if Dad is absolutely comfortable in a setting where others are dressing for dinner and he remains "tie-less" then it's fine. I never saw any "bouncer" types saying you can't come in without wearing a tie!

A cruise is a wonderful "inter-generational" vacation. I'm sure Dad will have a grand time. Assure him that the boat is NOT all "Disney" flash. You won't see red neon Mickey Mouse anywhere. It's very understated and very classy. The shows are pure Disney...and Disney at it's best!

Good luck and I'm sure others will give you their $.02 as well.

Karen

Patsy -

I haven't been on any cruise yet but I do think that Thanksgiving is a great time to on one. I'm personally looking forward to someone else cooking Thanksgiving dinner. It's well worth the price just for that. I normally have around 25 people.

Everyone here has been very welcoming for us "newcomers" to the Turkeys and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone next November.

As for your father - I don't care if he wears a tie or not. I just won't tell DH it's allowed cause he'd try to go without one too!:rotfl2:

BTW - I love your quilts. Couldn't help but look when I saw your link cause I'm a quilter too.

Hope you join us. Decide soon. The prices have gone up a couple times already since the prices were released in December.

Thursday night is usually semi-formal, but note that since this will be an eastern, i think formal might be sunday rather than monday.

Hello all

I was just reading a trip report and had a question - I posted it there too - but I JUST KNOW someone on here will know as well

On the last morning - is the buffett open???? can we go there instead of the place where we ate the night before????

Hello Turkey Gang!
I am thinking of going on the 2009 Thanksgiving cruise and trying to talk my Brother, SIL, Mom Dad and other family members into joining us.
You sound like you've been here before so could you please help me out with some answers?
How many folks dress up for pirate night? (I really want to make them all nice costumes)
How dressy is Thanksgiving?
Is there anything else I need to know that's special about this cruise. Something I should warn/talk up to the family?
Thanks Heaps.
MM

HELLOOOO and welcome!!! This will be my third DC - and boy o boy I am so EXCITED!!! We did a family cruise in 2006 and had a blast - we are doing it again (minus three of our family who can not make it this time )

I think your family will have a blast!!!!

Yes, the buffet is open. But only go if you are a glutton for punishment and like crowds and frazzled servers. They are shortstaffed on that morning.

Instead go to the dining room breakfast where you will be served quickly and politely. You will also have plenty of elbow room since everyone else is trying to have a "quick" breakfast upstairs.

We have early dining and the idea of getting up to eat at 6am kills me on the final day! eheheh

The last two cruises we ate in Lumiere's and we did not care for it - DH did not like the selection - and DD did not like the fact that it was that EARLY - I was thinking breakfast at Topsiders at 8:00 ish was better -

Just an fyi about the selection of breakfast items on the final morning....The menu has changed!!! :cool1: On our Magic cruise this past march everyone was quite pleased w/ the selection of menu items available. It wasn't limited to preplated, depressing, final morning options. There was quite a variety!! :thumbsup2 However, it didn't make leaving the Magic any easier!! :(

6 am would make a difference. We always have late seating and late breakfast on disembarkation day. We also drive straight home to ATL on dimbark day so we appreciate the early start.

Woah...Woah...Woah...Did someone say 6:00 am for breakfast on disembark day? :faint: This just may be the one last thing that will push my DH to go with late seating :woohoo: I mean how does he expect me to miss dinner with the Turkey Gang and get up in time for 6:00 Am breakfast and be happy about it? I think I feel a change coming on. But let me ask you first, Chuck, maybe you know, since I booked through DVC, will this be considered a change in reservation, ($95.00 fee)? I mean I will only be changing the dining time.

BTW, we changed cabins yesterday and gave my DFIL his own cabin across the hall from us, so he will have his own space and it actually cost us less points. We stayed in the same type of cabin and got him a inside cabin, but we did have to pay the new fuel surcharge for rebooking. Wish I had studied the point charts sooner. Oh well, live and learn.

Hope everyone is having a great week.

thanks,

Elsie

6 a.m. breakfast is why we chose late dining. I mean afterall...at 6 a.m. they'd have to serve me in my PJs...and even then I still wouldn't be "civil." DH says I'm worse than a bear with hangnails in the morning...and he's so right!

yeah, 6:00 am is really early to be at breakfast. I'll speak to him tonight and hopefully be able to sway him to the late seating. Of course, I'll tell him that I just found out they have a refillable Beer mug on board first. :goodvibes

There should not be a charge for switching seatings from early to late seating.

So what were th new options?

Rob

Icemanpad - Thanks, somehow I just knew you would know.

And yes, we can switch from early to late seating :yay: . Thanks so much for all your help.

Now what's the new menu like?

Elsie

I wish that I could remeber all of the options!! :confused3 However, I am always sooo sad on the last morning, leaving the Magic!! :( From what I can remember, there were various wrap and breakfast sandwich options, mueslix, various types of egg dishes (not just plain scrambled), fruits, cereals, etc. It was the first time that we actually enjoyed the food at the farewell breakfast!!!

Lisa

Lisa - I can't even imagine what it is going to be like to leave the ship, sad sad day. But with all this planning, we get many, many happy days.

As far as the food on the cruise itself, is the food pretty good? I read so many diiferent views? We enjoy a nice steak as much as we enjoy a greasy burger, so we aren't exactly picky eaters.

Oh, I just can't wait to sail.:sail:

I will jump in here..The steaks are good ( We are Texans and love our beef) but not spectacular, If you eat at Palo then you will get a really nice steak. The burgers ..well lets just say they are lacking in taste and quality don't even think about eating the hotdogs . The food over all is good and some things are even great like the wild forest mushroom soup while the lobster is hit or miss ( it is not Maine lobster tail) the salads are good and most of the deserts are great.

Rob

the eggs are the pits
