TSA Delays Hoards After They Foul Up

And you never made a mistake at work?
Tonka's Skipper, from what I can tell - no, neither PR surfer nor CPT Tripps has ever made a mistake at work.

Either that, or it's not the concern of their respective businesses' customers (or newsworthy, or entitled to criticism) when they do. And it also doesn't matter that flight delays are a fact of life at EWR daily due to simple logistics (you can't have 15 flights take off at 8 AM when you only have three or four runways, and those delays ripple, making arrivals & departures later and later as the day progresses... EVERY day).

With all due repect.......some people like to sit and make cute snarky comments......that usually doesn't bother me, but when they have a grude againist the TSA and then make every little thing look like the end of the world...call them all thieves, and dumb......that is over the line.especailly when TSA cannot defend themselves here. Is TSA perfect, of course not and neither am I.

Ho wait............maybe thats the point, they can be rude and *all knowing*, hidden behind a computer screen, with having to worry about TSA defending themselves!

Kayti and Tonka . . .

Never said that I don't make mistakes (heck, look at my spelling). Nor did I call the Airport Security Screeners "thieves" (heck, I haven't linked to all the recent news articles about thefts at the checkpoints) or "dumb."

And you never made a mistake at work?
I have. More times than I care to mention. However if I mess up at work, I only inconvenience one person - my client. And I both rectify the mistake and compensate the client. And usually it doesn't get to that point, because I usually catch it and correct it before anyone else finds out.

Also, no one's safety is at risk if I mess up. I mean, unless you know a way in which a plane can crash because I sent out an image in a web resolution instead of print.

Sam we did read the same article. Nothing was found in the bag and nothing was found in the secure area. What we have is a "determination" that they rechecked the bag they missed before. How they "determined" that I don't know. What I do know is that
The TSA then gave a description of a tall black male carrying a black laptop bag, according to the police report. That person was also found, and ruled out.

"This process continued three more times," the police report says. Police found, and then ruled out, a white woman traveling with two children in a stroller, a 6-foot white male wearing a brown shirt and jeans and carrying a suitcase, and a white male with curly brown hair wearing a JetBlue uniform.

After the fifth false identification, authorities ordered the terminal area shut down and cleared. All passengers, flight crews and employees were told to leave for rescreening.

Five incorrect IDs of people and then they get the correct bag? If it was a JetBlue employee, there were scores of bags just like it being searched.

Ho wait............maybe thats the point, they can be rude and *all knowing*, hidden behind a computer screen, with having to worry about TSA defending themselves!
Nope. I will tell an offending TSO to their face and write a letter to the TSA, and copy the local airport authorities, local FSD, and my congresscritters.

I already have a form letter written for this. That is how often I fly.

I spoke with people who came through my booth from NJ (which by the way are some of the most incredibly rude people on the planet, not all, but most) and all of them told me that someone had breached security and they closed the airport to investigate. I am sorry you have an issue with people trying to protect you and the flying public, but, I would rather a shut down then an attack.

Surely you realize that there are three NJs. The NYC end that includes EWR (really rude), the Philly end (only rude when sporting events are concerned) and the rural part - NW and SW (not at all rude, nice folks).

I have no issue with effective and efficient airport security. I have an issue with snafus like this one that result in terminal dumps and find nothing. Airport Security Screeners and the TSA management at EWR have a well deserved bad reputation and events like this one are only a piece of the problem. OTOH most of the Airport Security Screeners are local . . .

I agree the misidentification issue needs to be addressed and corrected.

BUT, I think you misrepresented when you said the TSA
waited a couple of hours and then said "oh well, hopefully there was nothing in that bag."

Again, it's easy to say "TSA, never make a mistake." However, the screeners ARE human. There will be mistakes made and this was one of them (I agree with there). So, the bag got into the security area without being screened. What should happen at that point? They quickly identify the suspect bag and reinspect it. I think they tried this, but didn't succeed in this either. So now they have two options...

1) Simply say "Oh Well", hope nothing was in the bag and continue their normal screening.
2) Shutdown the terminal and search it to find the bag. They found the bag in ~1 hour, then continued searching (presumably) to confirm nothing got taken out of the bag and left somewhere it shouldn't be.
3) ???? This is apparently what you think should have happened.

In my job, I can make mistakes that few people know about, I can make mistakes that cost my company money, I can make mistakes that could injure or kill someone (including me). I've made plenty of the first two, fortunately none of the last. On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being "doesn't affect anyone except the person making the mistake" and 10 being "let someone/something through that causes injury or death", I find this incident about a 4. Something that definitely needs to be addressed, but nothing to get in an uproar about.

:rotfl2: Looking in a mirror?

Nope . . . I too tell them directly when there I have a problem with them not following protocol in my screening. Most times they get it correct. But all too frequently they make a demand that would be injurious to me and I need to get "higher ups" involved.

It's a sad state of affairs when a passenger knows the prootocols better than the front line Airport Security Screener.

Sorry tripps, your many comments of the last 2 years proof you seem more concerned about being bother by secuirity checks and you have indeed called them thieves and dumb.and no I am not spending my time digging back.

As for the screen, you are the one always attacking the TSA...most of the regular readers know your grudge and lol at you now.

Me.I will defend TSA for the hard job they do.and will point out when something needs to be changed...

Right now they are doing a nearly impossible job, dealing with a public who takes out they fustration on them instead of the torrorists......

Even now they collect 2 to 4 guns a week from people trying to get on planes..........and I dont see the logic of people thinking, Tripps included, becuase she has stated so on here, not bleiving a torrorist could be a kid or older folk. Just becuase someone doesn't look like a torrorist, that doesn't mean they aren't a torrorist.........they recuit old folks and kids for siucide bombers......well documented, yet you and others here have a fun game of being snarky every time a grandma or alleged parents get on here complainting they were checked!

Keep it up TSA........improved when you can..But keep up the checks!

Just rest assured that some TSA employees ARE that dumb.

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=38780280&highlight=steal#post38780280
Newark brings us:
- the TSAer stealing $oo plus from a woman in a wheelchair.
- the TSA supervisor stealing money, accepting bribes for not reporting other TSAers who stole and conspired to steal.
- the TSAer that stole cameras and computers she sold on E Bay.

Not saying you're not accurate in your accusations, but you HAVE accused TSAers of being "dumb" and "thieves".

Thanks for taking the time to do the digging!...

and in all fairest....yes there are some bad apples (I bow to your point and the factual evidence in the media)....in any group of many 1000's of employees, there are going to be a few bad apples.

Yes, I am aware, that is why I said not all, but most. The Philly end seems to be rude with sporting events and bashing the TSA, if you are an example. :)

Not saying you're not accurate in your accusations, but you HAVE accused TSAers of being "dumb" and "thieves".

Interesting that you went back well over a year when I was referring to this thread. But, look at the context of those statements. Neither was a blanket statement about Airport Security Screeners.

In the time since those old posts, there have been many additional incidents that lead to criminal prosecutions against (using Tonka's words) "bad apples" in the Airport Security Screening work force for stealing property and cash from passengers' carry ons during the screening process.

The "dumb" was in response to
I find it ridiculous to accuse TSA employees of stealing laptops, etc. Do you honestly think these people are going to give up a government job - with health insurance, life insurance and a retirement plan for a lousy $500 laptop?? Or a $1000 camera?? Please.
Let me know if you think those "accusations" were not accurate or if you think characterizing those activites as "dumb" is off base.

Thieves was a listing of incidents well reported in the press that lead to criminal convictions. Since that post there have been many more such incidents. I said they stole . . . didn't call them "thieves".

Yes, I am aware, that is why I said not all, but most. The Philly end seems to be rude with sporting events and bashing the TSA, if you are an example. :)

But I'm always polite with airport employees and those Airport Security Screeners that follow their organization's protocols correctly. :goodvibes

You never speak poorly of "Government" or "business"?

Sure I do, but, I address the proper channels, I don't need to go on a vendetta on a public board.

As to your politeness, are you trained in all the protocols and know all of them, or do you react to the ones you do not agree with? It pays to be polite regardless of the situation. Reacting in any other manner only diminishes you and your "cause". IMHO, as one who works with the public on a daily basis, I have little or no use for someone who would be offensive or act out at someone doing their job when they cannot defend themselves. That, in a word, is a BULLY!!!!

You said they stole, but did not call them "thieves". Well, what do YOU call someone who steals? If you say someone steals the word "thief" is implied. Just like if someone lies and you say they lie, you don't have to call them a liar, people with a modicum of intelligence would know they are then a liar.

I so agree with this post!!!:worship::worship::worship:

I believe I even said your accusations could be accurate. Here's something to think about though... you blast TSA (in general) any time a mistake or something you disagree with happens. Let's take another "group" that's been in the news recently... school teachers accused of sexual molestation. Because of these "bad apples" (and they are EVERYWHERE across the country) in the teacher ranks, should all teachers be "painted with a broad brush"? If not, why is it okay to criticize the TSA (the organization), but not teachers (the group)?
