I have posted on the rent/trade site before but when I attempt to start a new thread now I receive a message that I need 50 posts to do so and only have 30 currently. Is this a new rule or am I doing something wrong?

Actually, it looks like you only have 21 posts that are not R/T posts right now. So you have at least 29 to post before you can post a thread on the R/T Board.

The board software now requires you to have 50 posts anywhere on the DIS to submit a Rent/Trade thread. That thread goes in to moderation queue. In order for the thread to be approved and posted, you need 50 non-Rent/Trade posts. That has been the rule since July 2010. In February, we will require that those 50 non-Rent/Trade posts be made within the last 6 months, and spaced somewhat evenly throughout those last 6 months, since July we have been allowing people to post those 50 posts over 7 to 10 days.

But, we've sen that many people post those 50, then never post to non Rent/Trade boards again. Thus the requirement starting in February to become a fairly active, continuous poster.

People can still reply to Points for Rent and other threads without 50 posts.

Just got back onboard after a lapse, I too have some posts to catch up on as well as the new rules. Once I read them it was fine, just takes some getting use to!

I read posts almost nightly and make a response when I think I have something meaningful to post. I can see with this new rule of 50 posts within the last 6 months that a lot of people will be very tempted to post "anything" just to get a number, such as posts saying "I too agree", " We think the same thing,", etc. and not really having much to say. I guess that is okay if that is what the boards want, just numbers...

I think I would get tired of reading such posts that are made just to boost a person's numbers. (hey, this is my second post tonight!)

The mods read the posts. Those types of posts will not count.

I agree with VLEE, 50 posts within 6 months to be able to post on the rent board will hurt the disboards more than help. You will get alot of two word posts.

Thoise two word posts will not count toward the requirement. Posts are reviewed by the moderators for content and to make sure they apply to the topic of the discussion.

That is good to know. I was not sure if the count was automated by a system or manually counted. And the only info I had seen on this new rule stated 50 posts and had not specified the content of those 50 posts. I was aware that modrators do review the posts however.

Like VLee I also spend time on the DIS Boards almost every night but only average a post every few days. The 50 posts in 6 months isn't something that I will likely attain, yet I still feel like I'm an active member of the community. This new rule seems to have gone too far and may eliminate some valid users from using the rent trade boards. I hope the moderators can continue to protect the community as well as allow average users to feel welcome. I support the new rule, even though it probably means I'm excluded from rent trade postings.

A post "every few days" would qualify you...after all, it is only an average of 2 posts per week.

To address VLee's concern of two word posts, the DIS board software does a preliminary automatic screening, and that is currently in effect. You must have at least 50 posts anywhere on the DIS before anyone is allowed to submit a thread into the Rent/Trade queue. From there, the moderators review the posting history, and make sure the thread meets our other posting rules, before approving the thread and making it visible to other posters. Then Caskbill's program checks for unbumped threads, and closes any inactive thread automatically. Bill's program also generates the "Where's my Thread" info, and sends the auto PMs saying whether a thread was approved or declined.

How can you not post twice a week and still be an active member of the community? Twice a week? That's so difficult?

You say you post every few days, so you should be able to get 50 posts per month easily. Three a week would be 78 per six month period.

But if Chuck doesn't count the whining, some people won't have any. ;) Just as long as he counts my whines about Jim Lewis and Disney Files, I'll be okay if I ever decide I want to rent out points. Don't think it is going to happen, though, anytime soon.

Deb & Bill - we both joined the DIS Boards in 2006. My average post count is .29 per day while yours is over 7 per day. I did the math, and I currently average slightly over 50 posts in 6 months (180 days), so I guess I would qualify to use the rent trade board.

What I was trying to point out (perhaps unsuccessfully) was that reading the boards daily does take some effort. Most of the time when I read a post and have an answer, somebody else has already provided a sufficient answer. There really isn't any point in my saying "I agree with XXX's answer".

I thought that this thread was exploring the undesirable possibility that there would be more "Me Too" posts, as that those who don't post as frequently might feel forced to provide. I don't envy the Mods job of trying to find the sweat spot where they exclude people who only want to rent points, while still maintaining a community.

As I said earlier, I support this decision even if I personally might fall short of the required number of posts in a six month period. I would rather keep the high level of content on the boards, than have to wade through more "Me Too" posts.

I do agree that 50 posts over 6 months can be a lot for an active, but not overly active, user. Some DVC members don't have the same level of knowledge and insight as others and won't be meaningful contributors to questions and comments.

I know I go in spurts myself. I haven't looked at my stats to see if I'd qualify or not. Frankly, I don't rent my points out so I guess I don't need to care too much.

Though, if you're one of those people who can't post but want to, why not go through David's DVC Rental's? That seems like a decent compromise.

The posting requirement is not limited to posting on the DVC boards, you may post to any of the many DIS boards. Many of the DIS boards boards are more opinion based, like the restaurant board, when someone asks for a restaurant recommendation. Or the Theme Parks board when asking about favorite attractions. Then there is the general Community Board, where there are all kinds of discussions.

You really don't need any vast DVC knowledge or insight to be a part of the overall DIS community. In fact, for some threads, you may not need any knowledge or insight or any kind. :rotfl:

thanks wonder why he was still listed as a moderator - know now why - thanks - miss him. He was a wonderful person.
