DS10's art teacher wanted to have a year end party for each of her classes that would contain a fun art-related activity. She decided on cupcake decorating. The class mom from DS's class sent around a request to donate items for the event.

Edible art and gingerbread houses are a "thing" in our house - it is our hobby and we have tons of materials and decorating items. I volunteered to send candy in, as well as marzipan and gumpaste for firguremaking. I sent so much that DS could barely carry the bag. He was very excited to do the craft when he saw the giant bag he was bringing in.

The craft was today, I asked how it went, and he said it s**cked, because all the candy I sent in was not handed out, and each table in his classroom only got a few tiny dishes to share. What was NOT handed out added up to about 50$ worth of candy, included some pricey packages of gumpaste and edible decor from specialty stores!

DS is "graduating" elementary school, so I will not encounter this art teacher again, and I know it would be poor form to inquire about the rest of my donation, but frankly, I'm really irritated. I sent that stuff in for DS's class, not for the art teacher to comandeer, either for herself or other classes!

That is all - vent over.

I'd call her and tell her that your ds told you they didn't use it so you were wondering when you could come pick it up.

God, I would love to and I really really want to, but doesn't that make me a crabby, ungenerous person?

Ugh, why am I fixated on this?

Absolutely NOT! It makes her a greedy hoarding person who just came into a bunch of supplies she now doesn't have to purchase for her own use.

Give me her number- I'll call her!

Yep another vote for the call!!! It's your stuff, you paid for it and you donated it thinking it was going to be used for a certain purpose and it was not so you can ask for it back.....There is nothing wrong with that!!!!

So what if it makes you a crabby person?

What if she did not know or had no time to use your supplies and she is going to throw them in the trash?

That would provoke me to call.:thumbsup2

Ive been a teacher for 20+ years and I think that is horrible!! I would call. Who cares what "She" thinks. She will be the only one who knows that you called and even if she shares the info that you called she will have to explain that she kept the things you sent in!!! I feel bad for DS. I know as a first grade teacher that the kids get really disappointed when they are told they are going to do something and the plans change. This seems like it was delibrate and he must be disappointed.

Hmmm, all these supportive replies are making me rethink my squeamish stance on calling her - maybe I will!

I have to log off to commute home. I'm going to check the thread later this evening to see if the odds are still running in my favor, and decide what to do then!

thanks everyone for your input!

Jane

Yes, definitely call! Update us on what happens, please! (So many of these things never get updated.)

I say call her and get your stuff back. Doesn't matter what she thinks. Get your stuff back

another vote to call the art teacher! if the supplies weren't used, especially considering how expensive some of them are, they should be returned to you!

Definitely call! I've sent food to school before for different functions and the leftovers always come home. Do it! :thumbsup2

The odds are still running in your favor :teeth:
Try something like, "I understand the items our family donated weren't used for the cupcake decorating. Since I sent them specifically for that purpose, I'd like to arrange a convenient appointment to get them back. My son can bring the bag home with him; if it's been unpacked, could you please make sure everything gets back in there? Or can we arrange a time that I or my husband can pick up the materials? Thank you."

I wonder if she used the OP's stuff for her other classes?

Absolutely- if they didn't want to use it it should be returned to you.

Yes, you should ask for the supplies back.

It reminds of a couple of years ago I donated a few hundred dollars to a specific charity that was run a "committee". Well, this committee then decided to pack up and support a similar, but different, charity and they took all of the money people donated with them! I would NOT have donated the money to this other cause, I wanted my money to be very specifically donated for this one purpose.

I did complain, and they said the money had become their property once it was donated and they use it at their discretion.

I didn't pursue it further but I should have.

May you have the courage that I lacked, lol.
