Because we messed up our PS's we had to miss out on Citrico's. Determined to have at least one more fine dining experience, we went Artist Point Wednesday night. It wasn't crowded at all, even for a 6 pm PS. In fact, I would call this a best kept secret.
Our server was Michelle, and she made some very fine recommendations, and even let us know a few things to stay away from (e.g. Spicy Asian-style Noodle Bowl).
DW's appetizer was Smoked Salmon Roulade served on a Potato Pancake with Wasabi Creme Fraiche. The crisp potato cake was a nice counterpoint to the silky smoked salmon, and creme fraiche cooled the wasabi enough to give the sauce a nice bite. DD had mac and cheese, which she gave two thumbs up. I had the Smokey Portobello Soup with Roasted Shiitakes and Chive Oil. Smokey it was, but not overwhelming. It was smooth and creamy, with a deep, earthy flavor of mushrooms. The only downside was a chive garnish, which was chewy.
For entrees, I had the Mixed Grill of Vension, Lamb Chop, and Rabbit Sausage with Root Vegetable Mash, Broccolini, and Port Wine Jus. It was my first time with venison, and I have to say it tasted alot like beef. The sausage and lamb were good, but not remarkable. Particularly unique was the root vegetable mash of potatoes, carrots, rutabagas, and turnips. It was a nice blend of sweet and spice, and the texture was better than smashed potatoes. Broccolini is a hybrid of broccoli and asparagus I think, and was much too firm. DW had the Grilled Beef Tenderloin with Wild Mushroom Bread Pudding and Bearnaise. The tenderloin was perfectly medium rare and the bread pudding was more like a stuffing, but had the earthy flavor of mushrooms. The bernaise was silky smooth.
DD had the Mickey Puzzle for dessert, a white chocolate puzzle that looks like Mickey, with four different flavors of jelly for painting. It also has two huge cookies. DW had the Artist Point Cobbler, with juicy seasonal berries and saucies...yummy! I had the Chocolate Silk Bread Pudding, which really isn't so much a bread pudding as a dense chocolate cake. It was good, but not as good as the cobbler.
The atmosphere is quiet and rustic, yet elegant. We'll dine here again.
On a side note, we ate at House of Blues Thursday, after a day at DisneyQuest. Some entrees approached the prices at fine dining restaurants, but paled in quality. We'll skip it in the future.
