Season's 11th Named Storm, Karl, Forms

MIAMI (Sept. 17) - Tropical Storm Karl strengthened Friday in the far eastern Atlantic, but posed no immediate threat to land.

The 11th named storm of the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season had top sustained winds near 65 mph at 5 a.m. EDT, up from 40 mph late Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Karl could intensify even more and become the seventh hurricane of the season, forecasters said.

Tropical storms have sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph. Hurricanes have winds 74 mph or greater.

Karl spun out of a tropical depression that had gathered over humid seas west of the Cape Verde Islands, which are off northwestern Africa. At 5 a.m., the center of Karl was located about 820 miles west-southwest of the Cape Verdes. It was moving west near 12 mph and was expected to eventually turn north, away from land.

Karl comes on the heels of strong Tropical Storm Jeanne, which moved over eastern Hispaniola on Thursday and was on a course toward the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas, projected to regain hurricane strength.

Karl should only mess with the Fish in the Atlantic.

Jeanne is taking a hard hit in Hispaniola right now and may disappear, but at least be very weak after her visit there.

I know I am tired of hurricane season, already.

I don't ever remember this many hurricanes back to back. It's a bad season. :(

I agree ilovepcot!! And I'm not even there any more.

what's the furthest in the alphabet we've ever gotten with the names?

this is unbelievable.

DarrenSt...You mean this one? OMG!!! Where's that turn coming from? :earseek:

I think that turn is from Ivan-they say he is stalling which will prevent Jeanne from moving north! At least I "think" that is what I heard-it is all starting to blur together in my head... they are working together against us now...

Yep, that turn is courtesy of a stalled out Ivan. What fun. A little bit more south, and I am getting it full on.

That's a great question. I'm curious about it, too. Now I'll drive myself nuts with it until I find the answer. Haven't found it yet, but I did find out that in 2006 "Kirk" is being replaced with "Keith." That just interesting to me because my husband's name was Keith. ;)

Who decides the names for the Hurricanes?

I hope they both fizzle out for all our DIS'ers affected by these storms!! There has been enough damage already! :(

I'm here in the Dominican Republic (part of what you call Hispaniola). Jeanne has weakened but the rain is non stop, and strong winds in the northeast part of the island. It could have been worse (like Ivan), so we're very lucky.

So far it looks like Hurrican Patricia in 2003.
