Just wondering if anyone has had to deal with flights into MCO & hurricanes before? They just downgraded Igor to a depression, but they are predicting it will pick up again. Did your flight get cancelled, delayed, etc?

We flew into Myrtle Beach 2 years ago & a hurricane went thru the morning we were to fly in. Our flight was delayed by 3 hours but we still got there, but Myrtle Beach is a much smaller airport than MCO.

TIA.

In 2005 we flew into MCO during the first hurricane of the season. Generally the Orlando area only gets heavy rains and wind because it is so far inland. We had no issues with our flight but it was a bumpy landing.

Myrtle is right on the coast so for sure it would be different.

Yes, Myrtle Beach was where it hit the morning of the day we were to fly in. I think it was Hannah. We had a 5 pm flight & didn't take off from Niagara Falls until 8 pm. They still had us come for the same time & then once we got to the Niagara Falls airport (tiny, tiny airport) they told us to go shopping & get dinner in Niagara Falls so we did & then came back. We had to wait for the flight to get in from Myrtle Beach before we could get in.

I know MCO is inland, but wondered if anyone had any experience with MCO & hurricanes. We're leaving a week tomorrow.

I just read on Accuweather.com that it's a tropical storm now and could be a "monster" of a hurricane. They aren't sure where it might hit land at this point. EEEEEEK!! We leave in 10 days!! I don't want a monster hurricane anywhere near my Disney vacation!! :scared1:

Eh, the thing about hurricanes is that you never really know what they're going to do until abut 3 or 4 hours before they do it. I wouldn't worry. They usually veer up and hit the Carolinas if they're in the Atlantic like Igor is.

We leave a week tomorrow. We've always flown during hurricane season, but mostly to coastal areas & got lucky but I wondered what an inland airport did when a hurricane may hit the coast as sometimes they do travel across & break up then reform again in the gulf or vicesversa.

Also remember the news stations and such really hype them before they even know anything about them. It was a tropical storm yesterday & they were saying "monster" then it dropped to a tropical depression last night & now it's back to a storm again. No one knows what will happen. The models they are aren't that accurate this early in the game.

We were staying in Miami one year & one was coming in 2 days before we left to head down (we were driving). They were sure it was going to hit Miami & the keys, but last minute it totally veered off course & went into the Gulf which they weren't expecting. We had beautiful weather for our week there except for a bit of cloud & wind our first day there.

From Weather Underground:
Climatology shows that about 10% of all tropical cyclones that have existed at Igor's current position have gone on to hit the U.S. East Coast
(http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/show.html)

If only 10% of hurricanes in Igor's position have hit the entire, huge U.S. East Coast I'm feeling okay about Central Florida's chances. We'll be driving down in a little over a week.

Most of the predictions they've been airing on the news here have it vearing northward way before it poses a threat to Florida. Honestly, it seems to me more likely to make landfall in Nova Scotia or Newfoundland than it does anywhere south of the border.

That being said, Orlando International Airport, along with everything else in Central Florida, tends to play it by ear (in the framework of established plans) when it comes to hurricanes and the like. Depending on the situation at that moment, they might do anything from shutting down the runways to shutting down the entire facility. It all depends on what exactly is going on at that second and what is predicted to happen in the near future.

If you're already in Orlando when a hurricane hits, it's for the best to stay right where you are, to be honest. The State Department of Transportation will convert many of the highways in Metro Orlando into one-way evacuation routes for those from coastal areas. It becomes quite difficult to get around.

Id be more concerned with 92L becoming a hurricane than Igor.. the computer models develop 92L sometime over the next few days with low wind sheer and a path that moves it into a more concerning area.

Yeah, but whatever 92L does, it'll be gone by the time I get there. ;) So I'm not worried about that one.

I'm watching this site:

Good graphics. Flying out of Buffalo on the 18th. Not looking good. Do DH and I want to put ourselves & our kids on an airplane to fly into this thing? YIKES!! Wondering if we should stay home for the week and put up the backsplash instead! Drat it all... I worked DAMN HARD for the exactly perfect ADR's up til yesterday!! AAARRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

We leave on the 19th too out of BUF, we'll be fine. Hurricanes are a chance you take when flying in September.

I am keeping an eye on igor, as long as my flight in is okay i will be fine, once i am at disneyworld i'll be happy.
