Can you give me tips on choosing a tripod? We're at best casual/novice photographers and would like to do better w/ night shots. What features are must haves, etc? Also price range?
TIA

Tripods are always a trade-off of expense, stability, size and weight. I have three that I use on a regular or semi-regular basis. A full size for around home that is heavier and more stable. A full size for travel which is compact, light and a little less stable. Third, is my Gorillapod SLR Zoom. Because I fly to WDW (weight and size are a concern), I carry my travel tripod and Gorillapod to WDW. Each of these attach to one of the two camera bags we carry. You will have to decide what you are willing to compromise when purchasing one because you will have to carry it and/or store it. Below are two of my three. The third is an older model Slik that I have had for awhile. I do not recommend the $29 specials from Walmart except in a pinch. I do not like to mount $2,000-3,000 worth of camera equipment on a $29 tripod!

you really don't need a costly tripod. tripod. i got was from best buy. I got the sunpak pg6000 tripod. It is a really good tripod for the price. I have taking it on rides and everything. Great little tripod for night shots mainly what it was used for, in the day it was back in the room.

Main thing is doesn't break the bank.

Asking photographers to agree on a tripod is like asking all of the world's religious leaders to agree on theology.

My gorillapod broke pretty early into our relationship together, I got the warranty replacement and its now sitting broken in my storage room. I've gone with old tripods that way a ton and arent convenient to use, and would also not reccommend a $30 tripod unless you are mounting an older point and shoot to it. The stability is not there for crowds bumping and stepping on it as well asthe locking mechanisms are known to fail... Just my two cents... I travel with my Alta Pro now. Its NOT the lightest or easiest travel companion, but it is the right tool for most opportunities
