We've never purchased trip insurance but are considering doing so for our upcoming trip. I recall reading here on the boards that trip insurance outside of Disney is more affordable and gives you better coverage. Is there a particular company/site I should look at, or do I just contact our insurance we use for our automobiles/homes, etc.? What does trip insurance typically cover--someone gets sick and you need to go home, etc.? Will it cover weather problems, such as a hurricane causing torrential rains and you decide to leave early? Thanks!

Different policies cover different things, but generally it should cover cancellation of your trip for any reason (weather, illness, change of work schedule) and theft/losses while on your trip. For Disney, I'd especially consider it if you're traveling in Sept/early Oct (hurricane season). Or if you have any reason to think your trip could change. As point of reference, Disney charges $75per adult on the reservation for theirs and it covers all trip expenses, even airline tix not purchased thru them. I've heard good recommendations for *****************

We live in snow country so we purchase travel insurance when the weather is bad on this end. I researched trip insurance before our May trip and it is very complicated if you don't buy through Disney. Many riders and many things bundled that you won't need. Also, I am not sure your flight delays or cancellations are covered through Disney if you don't book the flight through them, so research, research, research.

I buy trip insurance during the winter for the same reason!

I buy through Disney because they cover weather problems, and it wasn't expensive.

If you're shopping, know what is important to you, and make sure there is coverage. For example, for me it was important to have weather coverage, for someone else it might be to cover illness or cover change of work schedule or family illness.

We've purchased our trip insurance through Disney. We used it in 2011 when a hurricane delayed our return home. The insurance covered all our extra expenses including food, hotel, airfare, parking at the airport, etc. The only thing it didn't cover was additional costs to board our animals.

I have purchased travel insurance from InsureMyTrip since 2008. We travel to Disney at least once a year, and we never go without travel insurance. I have a daughter with multiple medical issues so buying from Disney was never an option as they do not cover preexisting conditions. Once I pay first deposit I do a search on InsureMyTrip website including total nonrefundable trip cost and usually choose either Global Alert Preferred or TravelSafe depending on their quote. You have to buy insurance from them within 14 days of your initial deposit in order to get preexisting condition covered. You also have an option to buy "cancel for any reason" benefit. I also have used CSA for covering last minute trips - they are a little more expensive, but cover preexisting conditions even if insurance is purchased just before the trip. Those insurane companies provide decent medical coverage and I found them most affordable. InsureMyTrip has a very good customer service; I had to change dates of my current trip due to extended school year, and they adjusted dates of my coverage without charging me any extra fee. We also had good experience when filing claims with travel insurance purchased from InsureMyTrip. 2 years ago we had to file a claim with Global Alert Preferred after we had to cancel our plane tickets to Europe due to DD illness, and they returned all money very quickly.

We have very successfully used AIG Travelguard. You can buy various levels of coverage. There web site has all the information about the policies. Just make sure you read it all.

It paid the extra expenses when my wife was hospitalized in 2008 during a WDW trip. Covered the extra hotel, air fare, AND the hospital co-pay not covered by our insurance. It all came out to about $2000. No problems but had to supply the documentation to prove it all.
