Triathlon Thread 2009

Tricia...I got a Jamis bike. It's a nice entry level for a decent price.

Hi everyone! I'm not ready for a triathlon yet (can't swim!), but I'm preparing for my first duathlon at Disneyland in June, so I hope you don't mind my coming to this thread for some advice.

I've been wearing my running clothes for biking, but am having issues. My running shorts ride up which results in chafing from the seat. And my running capris are flared and during my last ride the bottom hem kept getting caught in the bike gears.

So my question is... where I can I get cheap bike shorts? I typically go to Old Navy and Target for my running clothes, but I'm not sure if they carry anything for biking. I guess I'm looking for something to train in, as well as something appropriate to wear for the duathlon. Thanks!

I got some sale stuff at teamestrogen.com. Good service, good return policy, sale prices good and lots of selection.

hungrygreenhippo I have found stuff at the REI online outlet. Also, Performance Bike has an outlet and right now they have Free Shipping on orders over $25 (thorugh Sunday)

hungrygreenhippo.....
The 'best' option is tri-shorts...they are padded, like a bike short, but it is a thinner pad that will dry more quickly after the swim. That way, you aren't biking in a big wet pad, nor running feeling like you are wearing a diaper. Or in your case, for a duathlon, it is still a good option...padding, but not too thick.

Many sources....I get a lot of stuff from trisports.com and they have sales fairly frequently, as well as a close-out section.

And now for a bit of silliness, just because... :teeth: The mixer starts here.

This week's mixer theme is "Superpowers That Would Be More Trouble Than They're Worth," and your question:

What would be the superpower you would end up being granted?

Some examples:
  • The ability to tell the future, but only one minute ahead of time.
  • Super-strength, but only in your thumbs.
  • The ability to read the minds of people whose language you don't understand.
  • The ability to see through one layer of clothes.
  • Super breath, strong enough to knock down your opponents. Unfortunately, it's because you're smells like garlic and you always have that power.

Of course, your superpower is unique to you. So feel free to tell us what you would do with your power or why you got so lucky as to be given it. :rolleyes1 Bonus points--again, they're worth nothing--for telling us what superpowers you think other WISHers might get. (Keep it DIS-friendly, though, folks!)

Hey Maura,

How'd you like to swim my 800 meters for me in my Tinman triathlon in July? :lmao:

I'm one water workout into my training, and covered half the distance. I WISH they'd allow fins, mask, and a snorkel.

Gotta get my bike tuned up. Mountain bike with road tires. Need to get some saddle time in the next 2 months

HungryGreenHippo - I've found some great deals at performancebike.com and trivillage.com

Jeff - I felt teh same way about the swim. Total Immersion has helped me a lot.

OK, did my first group bike of the season Thursday. It wasn't pretty. :guilty: Going to swim tonight. We'll see what I've lost there.

I agree with Betsy, go for a pair of tri shorts. Running in bike shorts is no fun since you feel like you are waddling around in a diaper (like I did on my brick run after my bike on Saturday). I've picked up quite a few things from Team Estrogen and I really like them a lot.

Good luck!

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions! There was actually a tri here in the greater Phoenix area yesterday so I stopped by the expo Saturday to check out the vendors. I tried on bike shorts for the first time ever and it definitely felt strange (now I understand the comparisons to wearing a diaper ), although I bet my rides would be way more comfy! But for now I'll stick with tri shorts for the versatility. One of the expo vendors was trisports.com and I found out they have a huge store down in Tuscon, so maybe one day I'll have to drive down and check it out. I ended up ordering from REI Outlet because of the free shipping to the store and easy returnability. Thanks again!

A quick question for you experienced triathletes.
I am doing a local triathlon next weekend and it is my first with an open water swim. I am told the current water temperature is 75 degrees. How does this rate for someone without a wetsuit?

75 isn't bad without a wetsuit. In fact, the upper cutoff for allowing wetsuits is 78. You'll be fine without one. Some may still wear them for the slight buoyancy advantage, but depending on the length of the swim, getting it off in transition may be more trouble than it's worth.

What race? and good luck! Be sure and post a RR!!

Betsy,

Thanks for the quick answer! It is a 500 meter swim in the CB&I Sprint Triathlon in The Woodlands, Texas on May 2nd. I'll be happy to post race report afterwards.

Good luck Richard!

Hi everyone, its been a while for me. Still training, and I'm finally (mostly) without knee pain...took WAY longer than the 3 weeks that was projected by the physicians assistant!

Anyway, today I've got 2:20 on the bike on tap, with a 40 min run.

Its not been a good training week overall, as I was inconsistent with my swims (I missed 2 of 4 training swims...too much WTO/LTO)....really, I don't understand how people have time to get in every workout training for the IM...I'm up at 0400 most days, and still run out of time!

Anyway, good to see all of you staying on track and in the saddle!

Mike

Hi everyone! So, today I just did a triathlon clinic and my first experience in open water and it was terrible! I swam 700 yards on Thursday, so I can swim, but I got in that nasty, cold lake water and couldn't even swim 2 strokes! I know I'm not comfortable in open water, but I thought it would be okay. Anyone have any words of wisdom? I have a open water swim clinic in 2 weeks, so there's another chance to get in the lake, but right now I just want to bail on the whole thing. I want to do this triathlon and I thought today would help alleviate some fears, but it actually made them worse. FWIW, I did not have a wetsuit, but will be renting one for the next clinic.

Thanks for the assistance, guys!

Today I did the event's open water swim practice. The temperature was 75 degrees and seemed about perfect. My first open water swim was a success, with minimal course sighting issues, with any luck it'll be even easier next week as I follow those faster than I in my wave (which should be most of them ;) ).

:stitch: 'Ohana Monday Mixer :stitch:

I've been thinking about how to create a hot topic for this week's mixer question. Turns out, the weather cooperated with me. :lmao:

Many areas of the country experienced above average temperatures this weekend, which made many of our weekend distances uncomfortable. (I was thinking especially of how the weather affected the racers at CMM, particularly our very special WISHers). So this week's mixer topic, which starts here on the 'Ohana thread:

What are your training/racing/recovery tips and strategies for hot-weather conditions?

Feel free to tell us how you alter your routines: when you go out, what gear you use or what you wear, how you hydrate and fuel differently, how to recognize danger signs, how you keep cool and/or recover from overheating, and when you decide to shorten/quit/take it inside.

As we all know, going out in the heat can be dangerous, so please help all of us by sharing your knowledge. :thumbsup2

I wish I had words of wisdom, but I kind of in the same boat (or out of it as the case may be.) All I can say is just keep at it.

I ran my first open water tri last year. I'm a good swimmer and totally comfortable in the water. I wasn't even worried about open water...then the race started! For some reason, I couldn't regulate my breathing and I just couldn't get into any sort or rythm. It was like my brain wasn't freaking out, but the rest of my body was!

Just keep going - it will get better - and after each attempt, you can come here to commiserate with me.

Saturday I took my older daughter (10) out to do her kid's triathlon training.

Following that I got in a 1,000 yard swim in the Pacific Ocean. The salt water did my sinuses good, since I've had a cold for 13 days now.

At least I got some strokes in.

Today, I will do a swim/bike or a bike/run.

Yea, sick or not, I got in a work out.

I rode 12 miles from Ala Wai beach park to the end of Kahala Avenue, and back up the Ala Wai canal. 1:10.

Then did a slow 5.11 mile run to Aloha Tower and back. Whew, that first mile was on some wobbly legs! 57:46.

Keep up the good training everyone!
