I had to cut down two trees in my front yard after ice storm this winter, but now need to remove stumps. Any ideas on how much it costs for a professional to do this? Any easy way to do it myself?

Well, my dad does do the stump removal (too bad you aren't in Delaware or NJ!)

He charges about $75 per stump, but it all depends on the size, time involved, etc. Its just him doing it, he has no crew to help him.

He has a chipper machine and somehow he puts the stump into this machine. He also uses a chain saw.

I've seen people take them out themselves with a chain wrapped around it, and a using a big pick up (think F 150 style), and backing up and driving until it comes up!

Stump grinding is expensive, we have had this done to some trees that we had removed. As far as cost, I can't remember exactly; I'm going to say that it was about $150 to $200. We had it all done as a package deal; cut down the tree, removal and grinding. Another alternative is to drill a couple of holes in the stump and pour Round-Up, over time it will kill it and after that you can literally remove the remains with a shovel. Just go to Home Depot and ask in the garden department to be sure on what to use. Good luck!

My neighbor tried to do that because he didn't want to pay for the grinding. Let's just say that it was hilarious to watch. He has a big Ford diesel truck and he couldn't get it out. Then again, it was a huge stump. He finally decided to pay to have it removed.

Some guy came around the neighborhood a few years ago with a wicked looking machine to grind stumps. It took him about 15 minutes, if that much. He changed me $40 to take out 2 huge pine stumps that were right next to each other.

Did you cut the trees down yourself? If you can run a chainsaw then you can run a stump grinder. Go to home depot or lowes or whatever you have by you and rent a stump grinder! You can rent them a half a day or a full day or a couple of days. For 2 trees you only need it for a half day. It is very simple to use it will grind the stumps down to about 6 inches below the surface of the ground. You will need to cut the stumps down though till they are about 3 to 4 inches above the ground. We own a stump grinder as we use it for clearing here and there on our farm. I have done it alone plenty of times with out my DH. :D
