travellers cards

I have always used US travellers cheques as cash whenever I have been to Orlando before. I am now being advised to use a travellers payment card which is pre-loaded with US$ and used in the same way as a debit card. Is this ok to use at counter service restaurants or do I still need to bring some cash?

If I understand what you are referring to, these appear to restaurants as credit or debit cards; they have the Mastercard or Visa logo, and so they'll just look like regular credit cards, probably the most common form of payment used in the United States, these days.

We always use travelers cheques. I love them. Once, I lost them about an hour after we checked in. It was just like the commercial. We had them replaced by the next morning.

I personally can't see the benefit of using a travelers card. With cheques I can count them, see how much I'm spending and budget better. JMHO

This is why I like to use them too. You can see exactly what you are spending and they are secure. A couple of people, including a traval agent, have told me that they are not so widely accepted now. Places like Golden Corral and walmart for example are no longer accepting them. Presumably this will become more widespread. We are not going until September so any info would be very welcome.

I used the prepaid Visa debit card for traveling in Europe, New Zealand and Australia. Found it is easiest to use when getting cash from an ATM. Used it to pay for items directly very little (and never in a restaurant). Sometimes there will be a fee added for using it in an ATM or to pay for something. I paid very few fees for ATM use and have used one in about 10 different countries. I have never used one inside the US.

A Disney gift card may even be better than a prepaid CC.

There is a little problem with prepaid CC when you want to use the last dollars on it.

If the amount of the transaction is more than the value of the card it will just be declined. You would need to tell the cashier the amount left on the card. They do a CC transaction for that amount and then you would just give them cash or another card for the balance.

With a Disney Gift card, they run the card, subtract the last amount from the card and then you just make up the balance.

Also when you use a Disney gift card, the receipt will give you the amount left on the card. For a Prepaid CC you would have to keep track by writing it down or calling. Though I have heard that they may charge you just to check the balance.

Of course if you are staying on property the best thing to do is just setup charging on your KTTW card and then pay off the amount any way you want Travelers Checks, Prepaid CC, cash, whatever.

What I do, is cash the travelers cheques I believe I will use for the day at the front desk. I believe all places will accept cash. Usually, I have no more than $50 or $100 with me, plus a charge card hidden away. All places in WDW accept them, sometimes with id, but they have all my info at the front desk. I find it's quite easy.

If you really only want to use Traveler's Checks, this is probably the best way to use them.

While cashiers are most likely trained to use them, I doubt they would ever see them the entire time they work at Disney.

It like our business takes Diners Club credit cards. I don't think I have ever seen a transaction for one of them in our system.

I'm not sure I agree with that unless it has changed a lot in recent years *** I only ever used travellers cheques last time I was there, both in and out of disney. They were just used as cash. I suppose what I am really asking is if this is still the case or has it changed?

Just came back from a trip to WDW and a cruise on DCL. I had no problems cashing my US $ traveller's cheques--but, I only cashed them at the hotel desks and Guest Services on DCL. I just estimate how much cash I will need every day--there is often a set limit of $200/day at hotels--not sure about DCL. I put most charges on my Key to the World card when I am onsite, and just charge things to my room (same thing, really) when I stay offsite. On occasion I have used US $ traveller's cheques at some of the Disney-owned shops at DTD, and have never had a problem there, either. Hotels will usually ask for a govt. photo i.d. to establish your identity before they cash a traveller's cheque.

I just returned from Disney World and used several travellers checks. I had absolutely no problem using them in the stores at the resorts or in the parks. I cannot remember if I was asked to show a photo ID.

However, your travel agent is correct that many stores and restaurants throughout the United States are no longer accepting travellers checks. The ones I used at WDW were leftover from previous vacations and I probably won't buy anymore in the future.
