Traveling Turkeys Part 2 11/22/08

I have a question for all of the parents with kids taking time off from school....
Do you write an excuse letter to the school asking for an excused absence and work in advance or do you just deal with it when you get home and call them off? :teacher: I'm sitting here typing up the excuse letter and I was just wondering. DS will be missing 3 days.
Judy

You may want to check with your schools policy. For our kids hear it is better to do a pre-arranged absence then call them in after the fact. I personally never give my kids work to do when they do a pre-arranged. To me family time is more important than Physics.

For us they finally made the decision yesterday that we do not need to make the day up from TS Fay. The state granted a waiver so we have the week off as well.

DD has a form that needs to be filled out to have it as a pre arranged absence. She then has to take it to all her teachers to sign off and give her any work they want her to do. :thumbsup2

Susan, if you move your legless turkey next to your count down instead of the bottom it will work. We only have so much room hight wise with our signature section but length wise doesn't seem to be an issue, just look at Ken's.:rotfl2:

I was just trying to figure that out today. I know it won't be an excused absence so I don't think I'm going to tell them about it ahead of time. If I do, they'll give DS work to do while he's on the cruise and I know for a fact he won't do it. Been there done that. He was only supposed to miss 2 days, but now Wednesday is a TS Fay make-up day, so he'll miss 3. He'll have 3 days after he gets back to make-up the work. I hope he can do it. It's horrible trying to get him to do homework. If it turns out badly we won't be taking him out of school for a vacation again.

Sandy,
Is your son in a Florida Public school or private school?
He's in a FL public middle school.

They're also taking away the first day of winter/Christmas break for another TS Fay make-up day.

I can't figure out how to get him moved next to my countdown. It messes everything up when I try. Can you tell me?:)

I was trying to decide what to do with all my left over Halloween candy and realized I could bag it up for the cruise. My dds are always looking for snacks during the movies and shows especially when we have late seating. Just thought I would pass this along to anyone who has too much Halloween candy left.popcorn::

Last time we cruised my son missed 7 days of school so the school allowed a work study program - where his teacher gave us all his homework (including a Flat Stanley project & trip journal - he was in 2nd grade) for us to do and it was like a contract, we had to turn it all in when we got back. That's only for absences over 5 days. This time due to Thanksgiving week holiday for a whole week, the kids are only missing 2 days and teachers aren't worried about anything. They are going to do trip journals, more for memories but will share with their classes. We're in CA.

Can't believe its 2 weeks away!

Every year the school district allows parents to vote on the proposed school calendar. The trade off is a week in June but the parents always vote for a week off in Thanksgiving which is why we picked this cruise. I feel for you guys who have to worry about missed days and assignments. It can get difficult as the kids get older.

Tropical Storm Paloma will hit Grand Cayman as a hurricane in the next 36 hours. The storm will leave the Caribbean by the middle of next week. No impact to Cozumel. Barring anything catastrophic, it should give them some time to clean up George Town and Castaway Cay (if necessary). If we were sailing this week, we would not be stopping at Grand Cayman. Timing is everything on this one. Glad we have some time before we start the cruise.

Ok it's hard to say but at the end of your count down I think there should be : with out any spaces past your turkey next to it. If not well I am all about hit and miss. I don't know but I usually will just figure it out after several tries.:rotfl2: Sorry I know not much help but hopefully it works.:thumbsup2 I see Susan has it. OH and maybe just past your turkey first instead of after?

Ken - I hope Kiah had a wonderful birthday and things are calm now!

Calm Down . . . I know I have been driving Michellene NUTS. I am glad this phase of the vacation planning is behind us. Kiah and Reed (He is the other kid traveling with us) were ecstatic. She was in information overload and really did not figure it out till this morning that we are goin in 2 weeks. She is even more excited today then when she found out. Once I get home, I'll post some pics.

:lmao: :rotfl2: Or waiting for her at dinner on the cruise. Next to the lobster, of course.

We LOVE lobster, but still cant get used to the idea of having lobster for thanksgiving dinner. I guess I'll have both!

Okay, Judy, I was hoping no one would notice that my turkey's legs had already been eaten.:lmao: No matter how I tried, I could not get the whole thing on there. Atleast you can tell what it is, right?:rotfl:

Susan
Susan,

I had the same problem and sent you a PM.

Our county ended up closing schools during one of those storms earlier this year. You'll love this briliant planning. They have the entire Thanksgiving week off but use Monday and Tuesday as "hurricane makeup days" (pause while everybody in snow country chuckles). So she is supposed to go in for one day of school for the entire week. Now how many kids do you really think are going to be there??

I just hit send and sent Ian's excused absence request letter to his guidance counselor via e-mail. It ends up being a 4 day absence Fri the 21st and then 24,25 and 26. They're off the Monday after the holiday for (are you ready?) the first day of deer hunting season - Gasp! I have a real problem with that day as an excused day. They better approve my request! And I asked them to really consider not sending homework that require text books. I am not lugging those things on a plane!!
Ken-Can't wait to see the photos. I bet she's having a tough time concentrating in school today. I'm having a hard time at work and I've known about the trip for over a year!

Teresa and I want Turkeys too!! How do we get one?

If my candy lasts that long. :rolleyes1

Our schools are out the whole week of Thanksgiving. We only missed one day from the TS, so they don't have to make it up.

Ken, Sandy and Shay -
Are you guys getting ready to board up in anticipation of the tropical storm Sandy wrote about? I understand it will be a hurricane soon.

:rotfl2: :lmao: I may close my windows to avoid any rain coming in. While I know November 31st is the official last day of hurricane season, most November hurricanes are not much to worry about in our area. Plus, the spaghetti models have it heading away from Florida, toward CC. :headache:

There you go again with your meteorlogical jargon - spaghetti models! What was the last one you and ken taught me - fish storm?

Yes, the spaghetti model is where you take cold pasta, throw it at the map and see where it sticks. That's where the storm will go. While the fish storm is when it rains fish. :rolleyes1

Judy ~ I'm not taking any chances, I'm just going to evacuate. ;)
