Travel ID

I know all the reasons why a passport is awesome, we have still decided against them if at all possible.

I have a non drivers license ID from Arizona that says "not for federal identification" so I think that means that I need to get a travel ID from the DMV for Arizona - can I still use that and a birth certificate to sail on the western 7 day out of port Canaveral?

It would be advisable to call and ask about your current ID... I'm not aware if that could count or not. If getting a driver's license is easier than waiting on that long hold though I might choose that route, especially if you get a RealID as that will likely be needed to fly within the next few years anyway.

(for anyone else reading this, yes, a passport is absolutely recommended over the bare minimum for a multitude of valid reasons).

Funny you mention this. They were docked in Port Canaveral when we were getting on the Fantasy on March 12. The Fantasy left port before the Escape, all to the very loud deck party they were having. People on that ship were waving to us, all happily oblivious to what was about to happen. When we returned to Port Canaveral on the 19th, the NCL berth was empty. We had heard, by then, what had happened, so it was a little sobering and sad for them.
I did a B2B on the Dream, and on turnaround day, the Escape was back but it was obvious it was completely empty. Water slide was off, no one on the balconies, etc. Definitely eerie.

More out of curiosity, are you intending to get the Real ID when it's required to fly in 2023?

As a former travel agent, I can only echo what others have said about getting a passport, but it sounds like you're not going that route.

Yes, getting a Real ID now before it is required is a good idea. Just to clarify: For those who do not drive, a Real ID-compliant state identification card will also work for air travel.

Yes, for domestic air travel only.

You say you know all the reasons why a passport is awesome, yet you are choosing not to get one? As others have stated, you just need to be prepared to deal with the consequences of your decision in the event something goes sideways.

Absolutely we will do that before our next cruise, but at that point I will have time to budget before I start planning that cruise, I didn't realize this would be an issue until just recently so we'll get the real IDs before I even decide which cruise to go on next.
