Transportation between the parks

Okay, I feel like a newbie since I haven't been to WDW for 9 years and it was only that one time. Things have definitely changed in those 9 years. We are staying at the Holiday Inn in Downtown Disney in April and planning to use their free shuttle to the parks. How can I park hop between the parks? Can I use the Disney transportation system or do I have to be staying in a Disney hotel to be able to use it?

Anyone can use Disney transportation.

You can use the in-resort transport system -- busses, boats, monorail -- at your leisure...

Thank you - my kids will love riding the monorail. I would love to take it there to check out the Contemporary Resort since we may want to stay there next time. We are trying to go cheap on the hotel this time since we are doing a cruise after our 3 day Disney stay.
