I haven't been following along the AP threads, because I have current ones. However, I also have 3 unused PHPs which I am now thinking might be better to trade in and get PAPs, even though we aren't planning a trip any time soon.

My questions:

Can I trade in the PHPS to be credited toward the price of PAPS? Assuming yes, can this trade in be done by mail, or will it have to be done in person? If in person, anywhere but WDW??

Will these PAPs work like the old system, where they don't start running time until they are activated, so that I can hold onto them until our next trip?

If you want to get a credit for unused days on old PHP you will have to purchase the new AP/PAP at WDW. They will need to "read" the encoded info on the onld passes to apply the credit. The unused days (plus features have no value towards an upgrade) will be credited based on their cost when purchased. That amount will be applied toward the cost of a new AP/PAP and the DVC discount ($100 for AP, $125 for PAP) will also be credited. Only one PHP may be credited per new AP/PAP.

AP/PAP will activated on first use. The old passes can only be "read" at at Guest Services at any resort or at DD.

Enjoy!

Yes, you should be able to trade-in your PHPs. It can only be done on-site, but the effective date of the PAP should be the date you purchase. And you will get the DVC discounted pricing (assuming you are eligible. ;) )

Note that trade-ins are normally limited to one-for-one transactions. In other words, if you have 3 PHPs, you can trade them in for 3 PAPs. There was a post recently from someone who claimed they were allowed to redeem multiple older passes toward the purchase of one newer pass, but I don't believe that to be the standard practice.
