We need some advice from you experienced timeshare/DVC owners.

We are have made a request with II to trade our 2br unit at Marriott's Ocean Pointe for any 2br DVC unit. We are requesting either the 1st or 2nd week in December.

We know that it is all but impossible to get into a DVC, but it's worth a try.

Question: Any recommendations on how long we should wait before giving up?

Our back-up plan would be to stay at either Grande Vista or Horizon's.

Something else that has been sitting on the back of my mind is.... would we have a better chance if we changed our travel time to sometime in November other than Thanksgiving week? Is it just as hard to get in at the end of the Food and Wine Fetival?

Thanks,
Melissa

(PS) I have listed our desire to trade on the rent/trade board

you could probably get OKW during the wine and food festavial - I don't know about BCV or BWV - if that is your intention.

DVC doesn't even put Thanksgiving week, Easter or Christmas week to be able to exchange - I am not sure about the holidays - but I got told about those not being available to non-DVC's...Of course DVC could have changed it policy.

I would think that Fall would be the most difficult time of year to trade, since DVC is cheapest at that time of year, so members' points go the farthest, and they tend to go to Disney then. I rent my points out every year, and EVERYONE wants to go in the fall.

If you trade for a Marriott, I think you would be happier at Grande Vista. It is far nicer than Horizons, IMHO. It's like the difference between Motel 6 and Contemporary Resort. My favorite is Cypress Harbour, but I guess it's hard to get into right now if you aren't a member. At least, that's what my sister has told me, and she's a member at Grande Vista--either that, or she's scamming me for my Cypress Harbour!!!;)

A 2 BR will be tough either Nov or Dec. Since you're looking at a backup of another resort in Orlando, you have several alternatives.

Personally, I'd deposit the two units separately and use the studio to search for CH or Horizons or even any of the others except GV. Then you still have the 1 BR deposit.

One alternative would be a search for DVC and carry it to the end or at least to 2 weeks before arival.

Don't forget a direct exchange. Though I doubt you'll get a 2 BR DVC even for a 2 BR at OP unless you're willing to take 5 days S-F. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice ..... one question though.....what's "CH"?

We have already deposited the 2br as one into II for the DVC search. Is it too late to split it up?

Also, why don't you recommend GV?

Thanks again,
Melissa

CH is Marriott Cypress Harbour.

Grande Vista is the only Marriott in Orlando which offers lock-off units, units smaller than a 2BR. CH, Royal Palms and Sabal Palms only offer 2BRs. Imperial Palms only has 3BRs. If you trade a smaller unit through II and you request a trade to GV, you could get automatically confirmed into a smaller unit. Since there are no smaller units at the others, you'd definitely only match into a larger unit.

We have already deposited the 2br as one into II for the DVC search. Is it too late to split it up?

If it was a "search first," then no, it's probably not too late to change the whole thing - you'd have to call Marriott to find out. If you deposited the week as a "deposit first," then it's too late to change that. HTH!

As Lisa suggested, the only reason I recommended against GV was due to the fact you wouldn't be able to trade up. In the future, split you week and deposit as two, a studio plus a separate 1 BR.
