I know this is not a good use of points, but which location should we try a trade to. We need a place for 8 so that makes is more difficult. Is the list we found here from II really complete? If we decide not to trade where should we try and make a reservation? We want a timeshare with all that we are use to with DVC. We know nothing about LV and just need some good advice. We could rent out our points to some friends and use the cash to make a resevation so that can work if it is the best plan. Also, we would like to take some day trips in the area. Where should we plan to go? Thanks for any and all information.

You are correct, it is not a good use of points. Hotels in Las Vegas are subsidized, so better to pay the going rate than to trade into a timeshare with valuable DVC points. Best to rent them to freinds and make a cash reservation in LV. As for side trips, there is always Hoover Dam, and a bit farther aflield, the Grand Canyon (a sight that everyone should really see forthemselves at least once in thier lifetimes). Others can contribute more, but thought I'd get the ball rolling.

I agree, trading DVC for LV is nuts. Search the net and look at papers from the major CA cities for specials. While harder to find, the $49 a night rooms at the top places are still there from what I've heard. You could also look to rent a timeshare there which you should be able to do for around the maint fees.

None on the list are that good overall, IMO. Marriott will be building there so it's likely some of these factors will change in a couple of years. The hilton would be my first choice for a timeshare option.

One of the nicest places to stay for 8 people in Vegas is one that is not on our II trading list - it is the Fairfield Grand Desert. Right by the Strip, very new and just gorgeous. We have stayed in 2 and 3 bedroom units there. The 3 bedrooms would easily accomodate your party. The location of this property is fabulous - between the Hard Rock Hotel and the Aladdin, just 1 block from the Strip, and very near the airport. If you go onto Ebay, you can regularly find Grand Desert weeks for maintenance costs - I would bet you could get a week on Ebay in a 3 bedroom for about $700, possibly less. I would not use my DVC points for this because even with a DVC trade (which woudl cost you around 250 points) you will only be able to get a 2 bedroom.

You can also try to rent Fairfield points from a member.

I'll add that I wouldn't even think of spending an entire week in Las Vegas. After about four days my head is ready to explode.

I would add that if you are considering renting points from a Fairfield owner, consider also splitting the vacation. They may be able to secure half of your stay at the Las Vegas Grand Desert and half at Fairfield Sedona or Flagstaff. Flagstaff is only about 2 hours from the South Rim. Sedona is a half hour further. Both offer lots of sightseeing opportunities locally as well. As with DVC, planning early affords you the most options for reservations. Owners may reserve up to 10 months ahead at all Fairfield resorts. HTH! :)

In case you're interested, here are some online photos of someone's recent visit to Fairfield Grand Desert in a 3BR. They posted the link on a TUG forum (public access).

http://www.lasvegas.com/ Here is a site that should get you started. It is about a 4 to 5 hour dirve to the South Rim of Grand Canyon, the drive takes you over Hoover Dam. It might be something to consider, it is always good to get away from Vagas for a day if you are staying there for any length of time.

If you post this question on this site below you will get many good ideas.

I would also reccomend to rent out your points and book on-line at http://www.lasvegas.com/

Hilton Grand Vacations Club (HGVC) has three timeshare locations in Las Vegas, two on the strip (one behind the Flamingo, the other by Circus Circus) and the third by the Las Vegas Hilton.

We are owners with HGVC and so far have stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton and Flamingo HGVC properties (the newest property just opened this year and we haven't had the chance to stay their yet).

If you want to see info about the properties (and how many people you can sleep in a room) you can check out:

Flamingo Property

Las Vegas Hilton Property

Las Vegas Strip Property

I don't know what they would charge if you simply called and asked for a cash reservation (as a member, I know what I'd pay, but I don't know what nonmembers would pay).

If you're willing to sit through a 90 minute presentation they often have deals for deeply discounted rates too....
