Hi everyone,
I'm planning a trip to Disney World with my family in June. We normally head for Peter Pan or Thunder and Splash at rope drop, but I'm considering doing Mickey Mouse first so we don't have to use a fastpass on it later. So I'm wondering, one, is this a good idea, and two, with Mainstreet opening before rope drop now, how does this work? Does a line form outside the theater before it even opens, leading to a long wait time first thing? Thanks for your thoughts!

We just got back from a trip the last week of January and rope dropped Mickey. We got to the park maybe 30 minutes before open and there were about 10 families already waiting outside the theater. About 15 minutes before open they let us inside the queue area. The line behind us got very long very quickly. We were through pretty quickly but when we got out I looked back and the wait time was already over an hour. Definitely get there as early as you can if you want to do it first thing. I rarely saw wait times under an hour for him our whole trip, so that’s why we decided to rope drop it. But I was surprised how quickly that line filled up!

Thanks for the great information! When they let you in the queue area 15 minutes before opening, did Mickey start seeing people, or was that not actually until opening time or so?

No, he didn’t start seeing anyone until 9 am at open. We were kept in the indoor roped queue area until then. It was a cold morning so I was happy they didn’t make us wait outside. A couple minutes before 9 they took the first few families to the holding area by the door to Mickey so right at open they were ready to go.

Another option is to go during or right after the festival of fantasy parade. The wait times dropped dramatically during the parade, I think the wait was 15 minutes. It was around 90 minutes the rest of the day we were there.

Our plan is to do Tinkerbell after the FOF parade with a FP. A bit of a pain to use a FP before, but in the past I have tried to get a FP after using up our 3, and they are always taken and by the end of the day it is a 90 minute wait.

We were there in October. Don't know if it is always this way but we arrived at MK towards the end of the parade on a day with MNSSHP. We pretty much walked right in to see Tinkerbell. There were only 5-6 families ahead of us.

Wow! If only I could positive it would be this easy! DD really wants to meet tink so I don't want to risk it.
