Tower of Terror 10 Miler 2014

Got our packet from Disney last night for our stay! So excited to go back! 180 day mark is April 5...time to plan! Any suggestions on getting to the start from a nonhost resort - can I get a bus to the park anyway or do I need to take a bus to host resort and then transfer?

Which non-host resort?

I know last year I stayed at Poly, which was a host resort, but on the bus to the race I talked to someone staying at Shades of Green (non host) and I suppose if someone was staying at GF they could walk to Poly to take the bus too...

This question is for anyone who has ran in a RunDisney event, on the site they discourage using earbuds/music due to audio cues throughout the race, has anyone still used them in some way shape or form?

I use mine each race. I don't blast them though and so can hear "caution runners" loud and clear :rotfl:

You won't be able to take a park bus, as the park will be closed for the race. And busing form one hotel to another isn't an option. If you don't have a car, I suggest taking a taxi from your resort. If they do the same as last year, you'll take the taxi to WWOS, and then take a bus from there to the race start. However, you should be able to get a taxi from DHS to your resort after the race, bypassing WWOS.

If you have your own car, the same situation applies: drive to WWOS and take a bus to the start, and the reverse to leave after the race. They don't allow race parking at DHS.

If we're staying at AoA can we just walk to Pop or would we take a cab as well?

From AoA you can walk over to POP and take a bus from there.

Another option for someone not staying at a host resort would be to take a bus to another park, from there take a bus to a host resort and then an event bus to the start. Or get a bus to Boardwalk/Beach Club/Swan/Dolphin and walk to Hollywood Studios.

A cab would be infinitely more reliable and quicker than working the Disney World bus system though :rotfl:

For people in NW Florida region you can also check running wild and pensacola runners association for upcoming runs if your searching for proof of time runs. They are also posting runs.

As far as room booking goes it is a bit inconvenient but I would decide on a resort and book. Just keep an eye out constantly for new prices and deals and when a new one comes out call them and they will adjust your rate. With the food and wine going on rooms will book up quick. From my only two experiences of rundisney events the discount is about the same through rundisney and passholders.

I have to run with music..... it's my 'space-out' to relax my mind.

I ran the whole Wine & Dine 1/2 with earbuds... many people did.

LOTS of people use them. I do for nearly every race. Just keep the volume low, or keep one earbud out, and be aware of your surroundings. rD races are congested and busy - you really don't want to tune out in them.

Thank you, that's good to know, I have to have music as well, keeps me motivated.

I am officially registered.... So happy I decided to do it Saturday instead of waiting till next weekend... I had a feeling it was going to sell out.... I'm a little scared since I am a beginning runner... I download the training plans as a start but feel I still have so much to learn and overcome but I'm sure I can do it! This is going to be my first Disney race!!!!!

Woohoo! I'm excited for you!

Last year, it was my first Disney race too--I had wanted it to be my first EVER race, but then I did a local 10k so that I could submit proof of time for corral placement. :)

It is such a fun time! It is great that you have such a positive attitude--I'm sure you can do it too! :thumbsup2

It is my first race as well. I also feel overwhelmed with all I need to learn to be able to make it through alive. :) and without throwing up. :):) But, it is all mind over matter. I know I can do it, and without knowing you, I know you can do it too.

Are you going alone?

I have a question for those of you who have been runners. My lower back gets very tight when I am running on the treadmill. Does this happen to everyone? Is there a way to stop this? Is it just because its on the treadmill or will it happen on the street too? Any help is appreciated.

I found my new running sneakers today. Slowly but surely I am getting everything in order to get started.

That's an awesome attitude! I will only have 4 5ks done by the time of the ToT 10 miler and the prep and all the info can be overwhelming, very glad we can all talk to new runners and veterans and ask questions and training tips and over all support if someone needs it.

I call the treadmill the dreadmill. I don't have issues with my back but I consistently had issues with my hip. I have not run on a treadmill in over 3 years. I don't have the hip issues when running outside. I think on the treadmill you may not always run with proper form which can cause additional problems. I realize that some folks have no other choice but to run on a treadmill. My suggestion would be to pay close attention to your posture when running. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Sorry if I didn't do that right but trying to learn. I have been running a little over a year. I just "celebrated" the anniversary of my first two organized running events if you want to call it that. Since then I have learned so much and my input is running shoes are so very important just like the foundation of a building I would recommend going to a running specialty store at the least to find out what type of shoe you need and like if you don't buy them there you will know what to look for. Running form will help you go the distance. It's natural to slouch when fatigue starts to set in. That will start to cause the back pain try to run more upright it should help with that and also help you breath better.

It was my first rundisney race, too. :) I hadn't run any sort of distance beyond 5K when I signed up, and I was freaked out! But I did the training and showed up and managed to finish. :)

Remember that all of your training runs are practice. That sounds obvious, but I mean beyond just feet-on-ground. I'm talking the clothes you wear, the shoes you wear. The nutrition you need to take while running longer and longer distances. The hydration you need. etc. It's all practice to find out what makes you stronger, what keeps you going.

I'm not doing the TOT this year (trying the Wine and Dine instead), but now that it's months ago I have fond feelings about the race, LOL. Time is an amazing healer and I have learned a lot about my hydration and nutrition needs since that night! :)

:) See above! Throwing up...first line of defense (after cardiac conditioning and doing the training) IMO is proper hydration!

It might be your shoes. Make sure you go to a running store that knows how to properly fit you to buy them. Many will let you take them home, run on them, and change them if they don't work.

Also, have you been to the chiropractor? I never did until I started running and now I swear by him. I can always tell when it's been a while since I have been. My whole body will feel tight.

That happened to me until I got the correct shoes. I was overpronating, and it affected my entire right side. I was out six weeks healing from a sprained ankle, sprained knee, and a hip issue - but it all started with the lower back on that side.

Once I healed, and got a stabilizing shoe (Asics work the best for me) - I've been pain free.

Course, last weekend I twisted my left knee falling into a hole I dug while working in the yard. So I'm out on the DL again for 7-10 days. But that wasn't a running issue. :)

There's places that will test your gait. Usually, they can tell from the gait test if you're turning your foot/feet out when you run. It's amazing how that can make everything hurt.

Absolutely, you can do it! TOT was my first long distance race, too, and I think it's a terrific one to start with.

New shoes may help, or it could be your posture. But it can also be the treadmill. The varying terrain of road or trail running forces you to adjust your body continually, while a treadmill does not; that can lead to tightness and fatigue. Can you have someone video you running on the treadmill? You may spy some corrections you can make to help ID what's going on.

Some tips from Runner's World.
