Tower of Terror 10 Miler 2014

Since we are all close to our 180-day mark to book ADRs for our trips, what is your pre-race eating strategy? Will you eat an early dinner and then maybe a little pre-race snack? What makes for a good pre-race dinner? I don't want to mess up and eat too much or too little…. Any advice would be helpful as I try to figure out where/when to make my ADRs.

That's a great question, I would also like some advice, I was thinking what people eat while at Disney pre and post races

We treated our lunch like dinner, took a late afternoon nap and then had a snack before catching the first bus. We took a banana with us to eat just a bit before the actual start as well, then ate another actual meal in the park after finishing.

I did similar last year. We had lunch at Raglan Road in DTD (no alcohol for me!) around 1 pm or so. Went back to the room in the afternoon and I rested. I purchased a smuckers uncrustable sandwich from the quick service at my hotel and boarded the bus to go to the start area at 7 pm. I ate the uncrustable shortly after arriving (so maybe 8 pm or so?) and had a bit of water.

Make sure to use the porta potties early--the lines will get long!!!

Then i had one packet of GU gel in the corrals about 15-20 minutes before MY race start (race start will vary depending on which corral you are in).

I also brought a second GU gel with me that I took around mile 5.

If you do decide to use some type of energy gel, sports beans, etc. make sure you try them out while training--exact brand, flavor, etc. that you will be bringing with you to the race.

I like this plan! I think I will do the same! It's similar to what I did at Wine and Dine. I was thinking maybe eating my lunch a little later (like 2pm) and then hard boiled eggs & a bagel with PB about 9pm...

Along with GU before the race, at mile 4 & at mile 8..........

Speaking of GU, does anyone know if there will be a GU stop in the 10 miler? I know there is none on a 10K course, but there is on a 13.1... anyone know?

I am actually not a huge GU fan, but I will say it is nice to know there is something up ahead if I run out of fuel :)

I'm bringing my own this race. Whatever they had at Wine and Dine last year was different than what I trained with & I think it contributed to me getting sick. (That and the watered down Gatorade stuff). I swear it was like Block or something & not GU..Because I buy GU Chocolate & this was different........

Was it the Clif Shot Blocks? I've been using those, and they're yummy. Taste like a gummy bear :)

love the blocks! GU makes me feel icky -- I bought the margarita flavor which has extra salt for PHM. Think they helped a lot - drank water and Nuun and ate those. Great for upper sweaty humid running.

It must have been these! It was not GU because that's what I trained with...

I rather have the watered down Powerade at Disney races than the crazy strong Gatorade they had at the Miami Beach 13.1 I ran 2 weeks ago.I don't know who was mixing it but I think they totally screwed up the mixture as it was so strong most people took a sip and dumped it while making Beverly faces.

I am pretty sure that there is no fuel on the ToT course. I think it is typically at mile 8 on the halfs? Maybe that is why since by mile 8 the race is near done.

This question is for anyone who has ran in a RunDisney event, on the site they discourage using earbuds/music due to audio cues throughout the race, has anyone still used them in some way shape or form?

They have the clif shots: same consistency as GU but different company/flavors. I can't handle GU but I kind of like the clif shots, and I love the clif shot blocks, those are like extra tasty fruit snacks!

I haven't actually used them, but I saw plenty of people with them in during PHM weekend with no problems. I think a lot of people had only one earbud in or had the music low enough that they could still hear/be aware of their surroundings

Thank you!

I don't remember seeing any fuel stops at last year's 10 miler. At Tinkerbell 1/2 and Princess 1/2 they had cliff shots around mile 8, but I still brought my own since I never trained with Cliff shots...
When they were passing out the cliff shots I still got one, and just saved it and later used it at home on my training runs. :)

So I would just bring your own fuel, and they do end up passing stuff out, just accept one and bring it home to try out :)

I have to run with music..... it's my 'space-out' to relax my mind.

I ran the whole Wine & Dine 1/2 with earbuds... many people did.

Most of the year is brutal in south Louisiana, but I guess the temps in the high 90s or the triple digits with high humidity where just walking from your door to your vehicle leaves you soaking wet has one advantage, being ready for the ToT in October in Florida!!
::yes:: Yep, you'll be well acclimated! I'm on the Gulf Coast of FL, where the hot Gulf keeps things insanely humid longer than the rest of FL and my biggest issue with TOT has been that I'm just wiped out form all of the hot, humid running by the time TOT comes around. I'm going to force myself to put in some AC'd treadmill training runs regularly this time around, just to break up the constant physical abuse of running in the heat.

I know it's not a very specific answer, but the best thing you can do is follow what you've tried and found success with in training! NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY is my mantra. I like a good-sized dinner before night runs, but I also have blood sugar issues and need more fuel than the average person.

Generally speaking, you want to avoid anything too heavy, with too much fat, too much fiber, as they take longer to digest and can end up sitting like a rock in your stomach at best, or causing GI issues at worst. My advice is to start trying things out in training and stick with whatever works best. :thumbsup2

Don't quote me on it, as I've always brought my own fuel and didn't pay attention, but I don't think there's a food stop on the TOT course.

LOTS of people use them. I do for nearly every race. Just keep the volume low, or keep one earbud out, and be aware of your surroundings. rD races are congested and busy - you really don't want to tune out in them.
