In Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut? Go figure! What's the difference between a watch and a warning?

A watch means that conditions exist which could cause a tornado. A warning means that an actual tornado has touched down in the area.

HTH!

A watch means the atmosphere is right for the possibility of tornadoes and the weather should be monitored closely

A warning means a tornado has been spotted on doppler radar or in person. It means a tornado is on the ground and if a warning is issued you should seek shelter immediately.

Watch = conditions are favorable for the sever weather event. Keep on eye on the sky and be prepared to take shelter if the conditions worsen. Aka WATCH the weather to see if anything else happens.

Warning = Rotation has bee spotted in your area. Seek shelter quickly and wait for an all clear. Aka you are being WARNED that there is rotation.

it must be moving towards Maine because we have the same thing on our tv that we are under a watch until ten pm.....we have had a few in Maine the last few years...

We just had some wicked thunder storms roll through. Normally no worries for me except I'm walking in the relay for life today!

that was me this morning. I packed up at 2 am because of the lightning! if it was just me I might have stayed but my 7 year old was with me!:scared1:

Having grown up in Kansas a "watch" is pretty much a non-event. Just keep tabs on what's going on with the weather, and you should be fine.:earsboy:

Gee - I'm in central Mass. and we were just saying what a gorgeous day it turned out to be. Guess we better keep our eyes to the sky. Lucky so far...heard a rumble of thunder around 4pm that never got here and it's been beautiful otherwise.

Just watched the news, the watch is for ALL of Massachusetts, but NOT the Cape. Into southern NH

We have a watch here in Vermont, too. We had a warning last week and I woke up the kids at 10PM and we went to the basement until it was over. They were petrified.

We don't have the tornado watch down in Newport but after the storm that rolled through this morning and the predictions for tonight I am definitely on the watch.

After spending 4 years in Indiana, I know that tornadoes can happen without watches issued lol

Yep, We are always in a watch from March to October. Its just the way of life here.

There was one in parts of NY too

It seems like, around here, "watch" means that there might be a storm, and a "warning" means that the conditions are right for a tornado to form. I suppose if one actually does form, there is some other word they use for it. ;)

I grew up in downstate Illinois, and lived in Nebraska for a while. I ignored watches, more or less, but warnings got my attention there. Here, warnings have become more of a "oh, I guess I had better pay attention to the weather" instead of "gather the kids and run for the basement".

Tornado watches are ignored.

Tornado warning means run outside to watch, unless stuff is flying thru the air, in which you head to the basement.
