:rotfl2: I like your list. I have to agree with your list especially number 4. I love lilacs too but a friend of mine who lives in Florida has gardenias and they smell really pretty too.

We've discussed moving there several times and DS recently graduated from college and is staying in another state. I'm just not ready to leave MA quite yet though and your list is a good reason to stay here.

As a former Floridian and Clevelander, you had me laughing here! I live in NC right now but we are due south ASAP!

I don't want to move to Orlando. I thought I did at one time but I would miss:

Fires in the fireplace and drinking hot cider or hot chocolate ummmm yes we do have that it gets cold here its freezeing having to stand otu side at 6 in the mornign at school it sucks
The red, yellow, orange colored leaves in the fall have those
A beautiful snow scene out my back door when I have no place that I have to be i have a forest out some of my windows a few houses down.
Break from yard work and mowing
Crisp sunny day in the fall when you need a light jacket we have those
That thrill from when you first set foot in WDW I go to disney once a moth exept when the passes are blocked out i still get the same thrill i have my whole life
A magical vacation destination just bc you live hear doesnt mean its not

ok it kinda pissses me off how little about the florida you guys know other than "disney world"

Break from yard work and mowing
I'd say that running the snowblower at least once a day counts as yard work. Not to mention banging away at the ice with a hoe and shoveling up the stuff the blower didn't get. :faint:

Heck, a walk out to get the mail is a major project in the winter.

What is that sound??? Oh, it's Orlando calling my name. "Beeeanie...Beeeanie...come...come here to live...I'm waiting!"

Even now, in the summertime, I see this thread bumped and still want to move south because I hate winter. And so long as I'm moving south, why not Orlando? I can't think of a reason.

And I'd have 7 Theme Parks in which to walk. The zoo gets old after a while.

Plus, I think my family and friends would come to visit more than if I were in Georgia or something. That would be nice. :)

The "moving to Orlando" threads are my favorite.

10. Too Freaking Hot and Humid it's too freaking hot and humid where i live (even worse than orlando, if you can imagine that), but there's no disney world to compensate

9. No Seasons i already don't have seasons where i live (although on the other hand, the mediteranean is only 10 minutes from my house - but still no disney)

8. It's the Beginning of May and its 90 degrees out. same as where i live, but without disneyworld to take my mind off of it

7. Love Bugs love bugs?????....yup....we've got those and a whole lot of other creepy crawlys.....but no disney to take our minds off of it (are you seeing a pattern here?)

6. Hurricanes ok....so we don't have hurricanes....or tornadoes....nothing really of that nature other than sandstorms (and that's not very impressive)....we do have earthquakes every now and then - not like california though....although we are waiting for the every 100 year 'big one' that's destroyed cities through the millenium.....and again.....no disney to keep our midns off of the possibility....

5. No leaves changing colors ours don't change either...in fact ours don't really fall off as it never gets cold enough....

4. No Lilacs same here and no disney....

3. Huge bugs that fly i bet ours are even huger......and no disney to escape to...

2. Lizards (they are cute when I'm on vacation, but not when they would get in my house) lots of lizards.....but more frightening are the cobras and vipers we have (but no disney)

1.No chance of a White Christmas. ours isn't likely to be white either, but on this one i guess i can't really say that orlando is better, disney or no disney.......this is where it all started, after all......but still i'd rather be at WDW....

well lets see, i can name a few. shoveling snow, taxs, potholes,rt22 parking lot, taxs, shoveling snow, driving to work in an ice storm, taxs, cold and damp, taxs, shoveling snow, pot holes, and again yet more school taxs, driving to work in a snow storm, work all day to come home and shovel it out of the driveway, cold, damp, rainy, taxs. (lilacs smell, sorry, had a lilac bush in the back yard, its now mulch) oh lets not forget about those 4 legged friends of ours that love to dart out in front of you (deer) every hunting season, taxs, freezing rain, pot holes, cold, damp. oh thats true, we dont have many mice because the snakes eat them all! did i mention taxs. i have 4 years of taxilvania to go and im COMIN HOME to florida baby!! :rotfl:

I actually lived in Kissimmee from 2000-2002. I was 24-26 at the time. Here's what I thought:

pro's:
Live near disneyworld! (very near. I was literally a 5 minute drive to DTD)
can go to disney for free if you work for the mouse! (*1)
Sooooo many good restaurants nearby!
Easy to make friends (*2)
Lots of stuff to do! (*3)
Beaches so close! (even though I never went to one in those 2 years)
Lots of cities close by that are fun for day trips
Beautiful weather (*4)
sunsets - Orlando/Kissimmee had some of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen, and I have travelled a lot!

con's
(*1) The mouse don't pay so good though, unless you have an upper level job!

(*2) A lot of the friends that I met moved away quickly. To me it seemed like Disney is a city where people come and go a lot. Maybe because I was younger and making friends with a younger crowd of people (college programs, etc).

(*3) Yes, there is a ton of fun stuff to do in Orlando/Kissimmee, you will never get bored.. BUT everything costs money! I was a broke young woman!

(*4) Beautiful weather... but hot a lot of the time! I was from Texas at the time and had never lived in the North so it really didn't bother me too much... you just stay inside in the a/c when it's too hot! Now I live in NY and love the summers but HATE :headache:  the winters. Seriously. I would take hot weather over snow anyday!

The drivers. I think that because the area is so full of tourists there are a lot of people who don't know where they are going and the drivers are horrible!

Culture - outside of disney and Universal... it sometimes seems like there isn't much else going on in the city culture wise. Maybe that's because I worked at disney and didn't get out of those borders too much. I did go downtown a bit to go dancing but like Julie said in the last podcast, don't go there unless you want to get groped. I was young though and to me going downtown was fun.

along with weather... of course there is the chance of hurricanes. That's just something you get used to when you live in hurricane areas. I'm originally from Texas... right on the gulf coast so I know about it. Basically keep an eye on the weather channel, if one even LOOKS like it's headed your way in the slightest bit.. get out of town! That's how my dad and our family does it and so far so good *knocks on virtual wood!* Unfortunately.. yes, if one hits your area your home and posessions could be gone.. but that's the chance you take! Also, I don't remember exactly but I want to say that Central Florida does get some hardcore thunderstorms. Can anyone verify this? Oh, and of course the ever present summer rain showers in the middle of the day! But those aren't bad at all!

n/a -

Not sure about this one but jobs: I did a lot of temporary work while in Florida. I think I had like 4 temp jobs before I got a job at disney .. I'm not quite sure how the job market is ... unless of course you want a low paying job at disney and don't care about the money.. then you can always work food service or something that's on the lower end at Disney! I have a feeling they always need people for this kind of thing.

housing - obviously I was renting an apartment so I dont' know about housing or pricing in the area. The apartment I rented was a 2 bedroom and I want to say it was about 750-800 a month? It was a nice apartment.. I"m sure you could find a 2 bedroom cheaper somewhere else though. It was a pretty big apartment with a nice balcony, 1 big bathroom, and the usual dining room/kitchen/good sized living room. I felt safe where I lived and like I said, I was about 5 minutes from downtown disney!

I agree DisneyKevin. My family and I ARE moving to the Orlando area next spring. We cant wait. For those of you who do live in the Orlando area, any suggestions on where to move to. We will have a son starting High school the fall we move. We were thinking somewhere in Seminole County.

Yes, I am posting an answer to my husband. Since when is March 9 "the beginning of spring?" Our son will be going to Dr. Phillips HS, which I have heard is a good thing, but what happened to Seminole County? We are ending up smack in Orlando (Orange County), in Orlo Vista as a matter of fact, and I don't even know if that's a good thing or not.

I really must love my husband. I'm quite panicky about this move. I don't like palmetto bugs (I'm getting geckos as pets if I can since I hear the geckos eat the palmetto bugs!), I'm not great with heat and humidity, and I've lived in the same city in SE PA for my entire life. But we'll be down there a week from tomorrow, so I guess I'll learn to deal. Mikmin6554 says I have to start seeing the glass as half full instead of half empty. Hmmm..... ;)

Those would have to be pretty large geckos to eat the palmetto bugs. They creep me out too but not enough to scare back up North.

I used to live in W. PA. and I don't find the weather here much worse than it used to be up there. At least here I have a/c.

I feel the opposite LOL!

1. Freezing my butt off and driving in snow! I am soo into Orlando! Too Freaking Hot and Humid
2. Who the heck needs to see dead tree and flowers??? Even the sky is white not blue! I hate seasons! No Seasons
3. Bring it on 12 mos a year? sure! YAY! It's the Beginning of May and its 90 degrees out.
4. The more love the better :) Love Bugs
5. Not fun, but I'll take the bad with the good. Hurricanes
6. NO RAKING DEAD THINGS! YAY! No leaves changing colors
7. Love them :( Will miss them. No Lilacs
8. Better than caterpillars pooping all over your car!! Huge bugs that fly
9. Yuck, but still better than the creatures we have here. Lizards (they are cute when I'm on vacation, but not when they would get in my house)
10. Snow is nothing but annoying or dangerous for people trying to travel to see their familes. It's only a view out the window, I can do without it! No chance of a White Christmas.

I am so ready to move now!! This cold/snow is sooo getting old!!

:thumbsup2 How funny, I was just reading the first list and thought- wow - most of those are reasons why I WOULD love to move there. Then I read Kevin's list. DH and I are planning our move to FL in a few years and can hardly wait! :)

I just have to point out that I have moved to Orlando since this thread started and I love it! I'll never ever ever go back to the cold, snowy, never see the sun WI. I love Disney in my backyard, seaworld down the block, and Universal around the corner.

Where i live in Australia the weather is much the same as Orlando. I wouldnt trade weather like it for the world. Humidity can get to me at time but its worth it. Id move to Orlando in a heart beat and the weather wouldn't bother me.

This is back!

I'll take another stab at why I'd live there.

1. It's warm
2. It's not cold.
3. It never freezes. Well, almost never.
4. No snow.
5. No ice.
6. Theme parks.
7. Warm in January
8. Warm in February
9. No snow in March.
10. It's not cold in the winter.

It's flippin WARM! Do I need more? No, I do not. When you toss in theme parks, there's a bit of a "duh" factor there. For me, anyway.

No chance of a White Christmas.
What is it with the White Christmas? I don't get it at all.

Why on Earth would anyone care about snow on the ground for Christmas? Most folks I know wish for no snow all the time and especially at Christmas if they have to drive somewhere.

IMO it is just more bad weather on an otherwise nice and happy day.

I can see it being odd to shop for Christmas presents without having to put on tons of gear and try balancing yourself on the ice and slush in the parking lot as you slide-stop-step your way toward the door to the mall with the bitter wind racing up at you, forcing you to squint and lower your head, then having to turn your head to get a gasp of air and getting pelleted in the face with a bunch of zinging sleet bullets...

...to just get out of the car in nice, warm temperatures and walk into whatever store you felt like without having to prepare yourself and brave the elements would be different and might seem a little strange.

But I could get flippin used to it.

Oh, I so want to be a snowbird...hated by both Northerners AND Southerners, but living the best of both worlds.
