Top Chef Chicago (Spoiler Thread)

I think Stephanie may actually become the first female Top Chef. :thumbsup2

I don't know about that. I can see her making a huge oops and getting herself booted. She seems to either be in the top group or the bottom -- that's dangerous on this show. Often, the ones who seem to always land in the middle of the pack last a long time.

The editing on this show is ridiculous. You can always guess who is going to be top and bottom by how much face time they have. Ted Allen remarked that Mark's (and ???) dish was his "new favorite" and they did not make it into the top 2 teams.

I would have liked to try the first and the last dishes. Probably even the quail dish. The rest of them :confused3 I don't know. The seemed ok. I don't like sea bass, so I thought that wouldn't do well... just because I don't like it. ;) It would have been better with the milder tilapia that Spike suggested, or the lobster that Chef Tom suggested. The lamb looked good, but didn't add up with the movie.

If I had to select a favorite movie, I'd have selected The Godfather. I'd have made a pasta dish that would have been much better than the one on last night's show. :) I'd have probably done a gnocchi dish (probably a butternut squash one since they were cooking in the fall) since Michael's DD and her cousin made them in GF3 (even though that was the worst of the trilogy.) What movie would you have chosen and what would you have made?

Thanks -- that's a really informative page. :thumbsup2

I didn't know Richard competed on Iron Chef -- that's pretty impressive just to be on the show. :thumbsup2
I looked it up and he lost to Mario Batali in a Chickpea Battle. I think I'm going to have to giggle if he uses chickpeas in something. It does seem a bit unfair that a chef who is so good to be on Iron Chef could also be on Top Chef. I think he's obviously going to go a long way.

What movie would you have chosen and what would you have made?

I would have chosen "The Silence of the Lambs" and made a live pate with some fava beans and a nice chianti! :thumbsup2

Timpano from Big Night? :thumbsup2

Then again, it probably couldn't be done in the time alloted and wouldn't work well as a plated dish. :upsidedow

But I also seem to remember them slamming chefs for NOT making a dessert too.
Yes ... I think it was last season that Padma, Tom & Co. did a multi-course meal and were disappointed that there wasn't a dessert to finish off the meal. I remember one of them saying, as the last course was brought out, "I could've gone for something sweet after all of this". However, I don't blame the chefs for attempting pastry/sweets if they're not confident in that capacity! I wouldn't want to be sent home b/c I tried something I wasn't familiar with doing!!!! Even the two chefs who picked last said "We did cobbler last week, why are we stuck w/a dessert this week!" and opted to not do dessert.

What movie would you have chosen and what would you have made?
Funny you should ask b/c when they announced the challenge, I paused the TV and asked DH what movie he would pick and what he'd make. He chose the Godfather and said some kind of pasta dish. I though of Chocolat and the feast they served at the end and would've chosen something from that feast. However, I would have to find a recipe on line and hope I could follow it b/c I can barely cook canned soup!!!!!!

Well, I can't cook but my first thought was one of my favorite movies "Dances With Wolves" and something with buffalo. Something you don't see much of so it hopefully would have stood out for the judges. Although I never saw the movie I thought about "Chocolat" too and wondered why the 6th course didn't do something with that.

While I tend to agree, don't forget that last season Hung was on the bottom a couple times.

Good point ::yes::

Robin -- thanks for the article link. That's some pretty cool insight into Iron Chef. I always wondered if they had some hint as to the "secret" ingredient. :thumbsup2

I just wanted to say that although GF3 may have been the weakest of the trilogy, that scene was HOT! I'd make gnocchi with Andy Garcia any day of the week!

That was my first thought too! I'd have had one really rich, decadent dish and another that was spare.

9-1/2 Weeks - pretty much anything, um, "decadent" from the fridge.

Godfather - Cannoli ;)

Pretty Woman - Strawberries and champagne

Dirty Dancing - Watermelon Rind Salad

Well, if you're going to do "Top Secret", why not flaming hog balls with a wine that melts the glass? I know what Stephanie was saying about the cow scene, but that's the most memorable meal from the movie!

Finally saw the show before the new one airs. now I can comment. :teeth:

Did anyone notice, the very FIRST scene involved the couple. In fact there were 2 scenes about them as a couple. And with the previews showing Zoi having a whiny meltdown & Jennifer going to bat for her, these two will definitely be around for a while. I say another 4 shows at least. I think we should have a DIS contest to see who gets closest to seeing how many more episodes they will keep the couple together on the show. :teacher:

I am tired of these "serving food to the masses" shows! Like you said, Imzadi -- it's Top CHEF! Please- enough with the catering! Let's just make great dishes for the judges for a change.

Imzadi -- b/c you're more "in the know" ... do these famous chefs (Bourdain, etc.) do a lot of catering?
Daxx, I'm not really up much on these famous celebrity "personality" chefs. Although as Oh, Kay! said, I think most do have a private banquet room for their own catered affairs, parties & such. Some are probably really picky as to whether they will cater someone's wedding off-premises. And they do it because it's a regular client, or it will bring them a lot of new clientelle. They have to really be multi-taskers to the extreme to do off-premise catering.

The catering companies I've worked for and know about are ones that are a full, separate division of off-premises catering vs. restaurants who also do catering. It really is a full scale operation, in itself. It's like when the circus comes to town - they have to bring everything themselves. The party planners & caterers have to arrange for everything, and bring everything, cook on-site. Then at the end of the evening, be responsible to break it all down, like nothing had ever been there.

That's partly why I got upset last week. If people aren't used to doing it on a routine basis, aren't given the right mobile equipment etc., it's really unfair to judge them for that. That's like judging me on doctoring skills because I once dissected a pig in biology class and should know the difference between a vein and an artery when I see them.

Wolfgang Puck is one of the few celebrity chefs who owns (5?) restaurants AND has a full off-premises catering division. (He does the catering for the Governor's ball after the Oscars.) I once ate his tender, baby lamb chops from New Zealand, that were roasted with rosemary and topped with a mint sauce, that were absolutely to die for! :faint:

Did anyone else think that Stephanie and Lisa were going to get the bottom two because they didn't do a dessert as the final course? I was shocked that they were in the top two!
I was shocked too! I would have thought being last, they HAD to do a dessert by default. There were SIX courses, the last should have been dessert.

It's not like the first group that went had a choice of NOT doing an appetizer course.

Aren't those two part of the same group that added meat to what should have been a vegetarian course during the zoo episode? :scratchin

I knew Manuel was gone as soon as he said he was missing his kids. That's the telegraphed "loser's edit" on Top Chef!

The editing on this show is ridiculous. You can always guess who is going to be top and bottom by how much face time they have.

I had a feeling Manuel was going because frankly I never really noticed him before, :confused3 and suddenly they had him on about 3 times before the cut.
