I finally got my modem to work! Had a surge in the phone line yesterday, and it apparently wiped my old one, along with the slots inside. So after a couple of trips to Best Buy, and a dozen or so hours with Compaq, I wound up with an external USB modem, and things are a bit slower than before, as they also think that the surge might have damaged the old copper lines that service our area. But for now at least, I'm back!

I want my DS to read this. We too have a dial up modem, can't get anything else right now where I live. A mile away you can but not here. Anyway my DS who is 23 claims that surges don't do anything since the computer is on a surge protector! I finally just quit telling him that I still thought a powerful enough one could! Thanks for you post. Oh by the way, glad you are back online!!
