Too Many Acronymns!

I just think it is funny that people don't seem to care if they are understood or not.

It is also amusing to see people say I'm "demanding" that they change their ways. I'm not "demanding" anything. If you want people to know what they heck you're talking about you'll make some effort to be clear. They'll also learn the abbreviations that way instead of sending them off to some list that hasn't been updated in forever. Once again, if it has already been established in the thread or the thread is specific to that subject I'm not even talking about that. If you are responding to someone's question or are starting a thread then this would apply to you. If you post a lot this might cause you a few seconds worth of typing a day.

Here is another example of what I'm talking about.

Response5: Whats A&E? I looked on all those pages and it's not on any of them.
Answer6: Did you try googling it?
Response6: All I get is Arts and Entertainment but I'm assuming that's not right. Can you just tell me what it is?

If the "asker" wasn't able to figure it out on their own, like a large number do.

I think you are just going to have to accept that the site will continue as it always has. You don't like it, you feel free to start your posts and your answers however you want. Just don't anticipate others to follow you.

Exactly. :thumbsup2 I guess I just do not understand the problem. ;)

There is no problem. The OP just doesn't like it, and wants everyone else to change how they post, instead of making the effort of asking if there is something they don't understand.

If you don't know, ask. It's simple. What does SOA mean? Or, I could be be proactive and search out that dictionary everyone has been talking about. People should not have to alter the way they speak because somebody doesn't like it. Just ask. Then, you'll know. Then when somebody else asks, you can answer.

Yes, I am fully aware of how lazy people are. My job often involves clearing up all the misunderstandings caused by people who can't be bothered. I think some people here are imagining typing out Cinderella's Royal Table 63 times a day. If you actually read my posts you'll find that what I am saying is very reasonable. It will literally take you a few more seconds per day if you are a heavy poster. On most days it won't affect you at all unless you start a thread.

I've been on the disney boards for years but every now and then I have no idea what some acronym means. What do I do then? I simply ask. No big deal. Just the other day I posted a thread and somebody responded by using the acronym for Mickey's not so scary halloween. I had no idea what the acronym was for so I asked and they answered. Easy peasy. No need to get upset. Being on a message board it's a pain in the butt or rather, hand to type every thing out every time you are referring to it. What's funny is I have started using certain acronyms when speaking to my family, like GRR (Grizzly River Run) and they know exactly what I mean :) If you are on the boards enough, you learn the acronyms pretty quickly.:beach:

I've read every post and know exactly what you are asking. Just will not agree you are asking something that is reasonable. Asking the majority to change how they post is not reasonable, no matter how passionately you feel about the subject.

Also you are asking thousands of people to change something that is a part of the Disney culture and that's not gonna happen for 1 person. These acronyms have become a part of how disney fans communicate over the past years. You can't change that. If you want to be part of this community, you need to acclimate.

For threads like this example you've posted, 99% of the time, the response will be one of the two you've typed out as "acceptable" here. If someone's asking what the meal in the castle is called, generally speaking the first response isn't "CRT".

Again - most people here are simply saying if you don't know what an acronym stands for, then *ask* and you'll get an answer. Again more often than not instead of getting a "go to this document and check it out" answer, you'll get "CRT means Cinderella's Royal Table".

That's not what you got in *this* thread, because you didn't start this thread asking what any acronyms meant. If you had simply posted the acronyms you didn't understand and asked someone to clarify them, you would have had a straight up answer pretty quickly.

I agree. I believe that to insinuate that the majority of us are lazy simply because we do not agree that we should "spell it out" is ludicrous.

Yes. It really is not asking too much IMO. LOL!!!

This is exactly how I've experienced things. I've never had people refuse to answer when I've asked for an explanation, nor been anything other than helpful with my many, many newbie questions. I found the "dictionary" on my first day or two (as it's helpfully in the Welcome to the DIS board), and between that and other DIS users there hasn't been a problem...

Also you are asking thousands of people to change something that is a part of the Disney culture and that's not gonna happen for 1 person.

It's not just me. I'm just the one that doesn't mind getting the flame throwers turned on me.

I have been following along to this whole thread and quite honestly I think you are enjoying the argument. You have been a member on here for more than 4 years and judging from your post count you do not post often yet you have posted 15 to 20 times here. There were at least 2 times you said you were not going to engage any further and you still have. Clearly you enjoy :stir:

Bingo!!!

I don't know all the abbreviations - but it's an established message board! I can't imagine lecturing y'all on how you can communicate with one another.

If I don't know what something stands for I will look it up or ask!

Quit playing the victim - if it so offends you then don't participate!

And calling us "lazy" because we communicate differently than you? Not cool! Pretty rude and immature! You really have no desire to fit in here or you'd make an effort instead of arguing and calling people names!

Thanks a bunch. I see you skipped Chapter 1 on HTWFAIP.

Oh wait, maybe you were referring to yourself for not bothering to learn the lingo or ask a simple follow-up question? Or maybe take a few more seconds per day your own self if you run across an acronym you don't understand and ask a question. What you are asking is not practical. Since my polite response earlier got no traction, I guess RTDM is appropriate after all. (I toned it down though, that's more my speed.)

It's not just me. I'm just the one that doesn't mind getting the flame throwers turned on me.

It's not just you. But it's a small minority here. The vast majority of that small minority will usually ask what the "initialism" means. And they will usually get multiple repeat answers from multiple helpful posters.

The foreign language comparison several posters have used is a good one. You are essentially asking all of France to learn a little more English. NGH.

(Extra points for anyone able to figure out my acronyms--oops, initialisms--above!)

How To Win Friends And Influence People and Read The Damn Manual. ;)

(I'll admit the first one stumped me for about a minute but as the OP likes to say, it's all about context. ;))

Yes. It really is not asking too much IMO. LOL!!!

Have you noticed the people arguing with me all have very high post counts and the people agreeing with me have low post numbers? The same thing with is true with the private messages I've been receiving. If the desire is for the people with low post counts to turn into people with high post counts then yes there is a problem. What I'm suggesting is such low effort it is laughable the vehemence of the responses I'm getting. Once again, I'm not suggesting the abbreviations never be used. Just that if you're using it in a thread title or for the first time in a thread then type it out once. Then go crazy with the abbreviation going forward. If you're in some thread where it is obviously the subject of conversation then it is fine. If someone else has already spelled it out then it is fine. When I say fine I don't mean that I approve. I mean that the largest portion of people are going to fully understand the response.

It would be very easy for me to start linking examples of confusion caused by this but I'm absolutely not going to do that. I'm not going to start pointing out individuals because that would be a pretty rotten thing to do in my opinion. The one that has been posted in this thread was not brought up by me and when I did quote it in response I redacted the user name.

I'm not going to say that I won't respond again if someone starts up with personal attacks but since we're spinning in circles I'll let it go. I'm happy that I've been able to keep this thread active for two full days now and a lot of people will have seen it. Maybe some of the newer people that aren't so set in their ways will take what I've said to heart and it will help a little down the road. This is something that will improve the forum and make it friendlier to new visitors and would almost certainly improve the return rate of one time visitors and conversion to members and then to active posters. I actually manage some forums and forum software for some sites whose volume would make disboards look like a weekend hobby. The site I currently manage has about 2.5 million active posters. I'm not making those numbers up about anonymous to member to active poster conversions. Those percentages are pretty universally true.

How about you run your big forums the way you see fit and not insult and try to change this little insignificant one!

This thread could be called many things, but making the Disboards feel friendlier is not one of them.

Neither is calling a whole group of posters lazy very friendly.

And you know what the best thing is? We are all free to use acronyms if we want to, or not if we don't want to. No one gets to make that decision!

Post how you want. Leave the lectures up to the Mods for when they see fit.

Of course I'm going to respond more in a controversial thread I started. I took a trip in 2011 so I posted some then. I'm going in December so I'm back more often now. In between then and now I occasionally visited and posted just to keep up on major changes at Disney. Also, yes I am getting quite a kick out of how offended people get when you dare to suggest something that will improve their forum. Especially when it is such an easy and low effort change. You'd think I kicked their dog. I like dogs. I wouldn't do that.
