Too late for five- and six-year olds?

I do have to ask a question of those who's kids stay up late. How do you do it? I love my DD but by 8pm I need time to myself so it's off to bed for her.

For me, I don't mind if they are still up, as long as they are in their rooms and quiet!
If they cannot go to sleep and are up until 10:00 looking at a book, fine with me, but they are not sitting next to me on the couch watching Desperate Housewives or anything. LOL
Quiet time for them, quiet time for Mommy and Daddy.

I feel bad for the birthday child they won't understand why no one is coming to their party.

I agree with this. I personally wouldnt plan a party for that time, but as others have said who knows what this mom's schedule is this could be the only time she has. My ds's both 3 and 9 year old go to bed at 9:00 on school nights on weekends they stay up later we usually watch a movie usually 10:00 on the weekends they are in bed. We probably would have went to the party even if only for a half hour or forty minutes, because I always felt so bad for the kids that no one comes to their party or the ones that dont get invited. :guilty:

My daughter is 2 and goes to bed at 8 on school nights and between 9 and 10 on weekends so I'd let her go to the party. She needs between 9-10 hours of sleep at night, depending on how long she napped that day, and will never sleep past 10 hours regardless of what time she's put to bed, or past 8am, so that's how we decided on her bedtime. For a 1 time birthday party though, I'd definitely let her go, but she's really good about napping longer if she got less sleep so the lack of sleep wouldn't concern me much.

I work until 4 so i m glad my daughter is a night owl type kid..I get to spend some time with her doing things in the evening....even at her school they have school functions that don't end until 830-9pm on a school night for the kids! The library program she goes to once a week doesn't end until 830 so we come home and then sit around watching TV together, playing a game , reading a book etc...my 6 year old goes to bed between 10-10:30 on school nights and on school vacations/weekends she sometimes is up until midnight.
I certainly would have let her go to that party....especially since its on the weekend...

For special occassions (and when we have nothing going on the next day), I let DD stay up, but usually she's the one telling me she's tired and wants to go to bed. :teeth: If the party was at someone's home, I probably would have done the "stop by for 30 minutes or so" thing, but I really wouldn't want a Mom to have to pay for my child, who won't eat that late and wouldn't be staying the whole time.
