Tonsil Stones, grrrrr!!

Only time I got rid of them 100 percent was when I was on doxycycline for Lyme disease. I have recently found out I have allergy to gluten and have been gluten free for about 4 weeks know and have noticed a decline in them. Maybe try that?

You know, now that you mention it, I have not had the problem in quite a while.
I was diagnosed with food allergies and have avoided all the offenders.
And have not had the smelly little buggers in quite some time.:goodvibes

Do you want me to add to the EEEEEWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEE factor?

As a laboratorian, I was fascinated with these things. So one day I smeared it onto a slide,
gram stained it and looked at them under the microscope.
EEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
It was solid gram negative rods. I didn't culture them, perhaps someone with micro experience
could guess as to what those little buggers are.
But do they stink!

I read online during all that research that they could be alive- made up of lots of bacteria that produce that foul smell.

Oops. Gram negative rods are bacteria. Sorry, I should have said that.
But what was interesting was that the bacteria was all I could see on the slide.

I didn't know it had a name ;)

I call it Smeg...

Smeg! Good name!

I've had these since jr high, I'm now 44, and for a long time I didn't know of anyone else who got them and just never mentioned them to anyone. The worst is when one come loose when you're in public and you don't know whether to swallow it (gross) or try to discreetly spit it out. I can try for a half hour to get one out to no avail, then I'll be in a meeting, cough and the little bugger comes out.

I know!

Come to think of it, I seem to have them a LOT less now that I'm using a netti pot regularly to rinse my sinuses.

Story of my life! Lol When it first happened I was mortified!

OK OP. Thanks to you I started thinking about these things and I googled them.:rotfl2:

Has anyone (other than me) had the pleasure of the YouTube of a doc (I assume)
cauterizing the tonsils and removing the Moby Dick of Tonsil Stones??:scared1:

I would post the link, but I don't want to be the target of a "Too gross even for the Dis" lawsuit!:rotfl2:
Hint: It is the one labeled Tonsil Stone removal (not the gnarly one, they got those 2 titles mixed up!)
and I never did figure out what the organism is!

We call them plaque balls. I never knew they had a clinical name!

They are gross though. It's so gratifying when you finally get one out!!!

Wow. One click on YouTube leads to another doesn't it?! First I was watching the tonsil stones then I moved on to zits and abscesses.

Pp who mentioned YouTube: you are evil. Evil I tell you!! LOL. I like watching those kinds of things though. It's a morbid fascination I suppose.

For the sufferers of these stones- do they get worse when you are eating a certain diet. Like more protein or processed foods equalling more bacteria. I am just curious if these are similarly preventable like kidney stones diet wise.

Like I said, I've been getting them since I was a kid and we grew up eating NO processed food at all, grew all our own food so I don't think that's it. I suffer from severe seasonal allergies and thought that might be related? I haven't had any for a few months (knock on wood) and it might be coincidence, but I've stepped up the vitamin intake in the past year. Who knows? :confused3

Ow wow, I didn't know they had a name either! I always knew when my throat got sore I'd find them lurking in my tonsils. I used a q-tip as well to push them out. I had had enough with several bouts of strep every year and I begged an ENT to remove my tonsils. He advised against it because of my age (26), but post-op never regretted my decision. It's been 20 years since I've had to deal with the whole feeling of swallowing broken glass.

My DS had his taken out several years after me, and the ENT said that he was so glad that he took them because he found that they harbored a horrible bacteria. I am wondering if it is the same bacteria that mine had! So gross.

Add me to the list of people who didn't know these things had a name! DH & I both get them occasionally. We call them throat boogers :rotfl:.

:lmao: Yes, that one YouTube was quite fascinating, wasn't it!

I mentioned earlier that I suffer from food allergies.
Since I have become aware of my dietary restrictions, I rarely get these little buggers.:thumbsup2

I agree. I think they are a reaction that your body has to certain foods.
