When we went to WDW last October, we went to Rainforest Cafe for breakfast one morning. Having heard so much about Tonga toast, I ordered it. Unfortunately, it really wasn't to my taste. Now I know that lots of people absolutely rave about it but the descriptions of tonga toast at Boma and Kona Cafe are different to how the one at RFC was.

The TT we had was really thick (about 2-3 inches). The outside was crispy, like normal french toast, but the inside was really spongy and puddingy and (this was the bit I didn't like) really slopy, like it had been soaked for ages in egg mixture. It tasted very much like bread and butter pudding that we have here in the UK, but not cooked very well. To be fair, it didn't taste like it wasn't cooked properly but it was soggy.

So, my question is, does that sound like Tonga toast at other places? Or should I give it another try some place else? I also thought that TT had bananas inside but this didn't (or not that I could tell anyways) :confused3

I appall soggy french toast. So gross. I love the TT at Kona. The TT at Kona is not soggy in the middle. I don't think the TT at rain forest is the same as the TT served at Kona.

The TT at Kona is stuffed with bananas, fried and rolled in cinnamon sugar. It is heaven (but very very sweet)

We love the tonga toast from Poly, just had it last weekend. It was a huge thick square with cinnamon sugar on the outside (had a nice crisp texture on the outside) and softer inside (not pudding like) with warm semi soft bananas inside. It is out of this world!

Now I've heard there is something similar at Boatwrights at Port Orleans Riverside? Any comments/info on this?? :confused3

It sounds like it just wasn't cooked all the way through. :( And, maybe their Tonga Toast doesn't have real bananas in it?

The Tonga Toast at the Kona is wonderful!!

I appall soggy french toast.

This is funny.

I was watching Alton Brown (Food channel) make french toast once and he said it is supposed to be cooked sloooowly on low and placed in the oven and it should have a bit of a crunch on the ouside with creamy custard inside. My niece hates it this way as well!

A picture is worth a 1000 words....

Here's a picture of the inside of Tonga Toast, as served at the Kona Cafe:

Definitely not soggy! :)

Personally I hate French Toast, dry or soggy. It's just nasty to me. Anyways, I don't think the chef was up-to-par that day. It should have been dryer inside.

The Tonga Toast at Kona Cafe is the best. You should try it there on your next visit.

Blessed Be,

Ah...tonga toast...The only place we've had it was at the Poly & the only time we didn't like it was the one time we ordered it room service (all the other times we ordered it at the Kona). This was awhile ago now, though, so I'm not sure if that's a reflection on room service. It may just have been an off day...

Hi, is the same French Toast in Kona and Captain Cook ?Thanks, Vero.

We were at the Poly last week an noticed that the TT is half the price at Capt. Cook's. Is there any difference in portion size?

Thanks!!!

Mark

You all are killing me with the talks of Tonga Toast. Oh my was that so good. It is like when you die, and go to heaven good!! It was the first time. I ever had it. And, to be honest. I have been thinking about it ever since. Ironically, my 13 year old son, who eats just about anything. Didnt really care for it. We shared. A tonga toast, and I think it's called the big kahuna. I thought the big kahuna, was just so-so. The tonga toast. Was Simply amazing. August, could not come fast enough!!:yay:

Not too get too far off topic here, but what my DH and I do is order the Tonga Toast, and this, and share them:

This is the "Macadamia Pineapple pancakes". It's not as sweet as it looks, and alongside the Tonga Toast, it makes the perfect Kona Cafe/Polynesian breakfast!! :sunny: And don't forget a cup of Kona coffee to go with it! :surfweb:

Seaspray, that looks amazingly good. Maybe, I need to go eat breakfast. Question. you say, it is not that sweet, the pancakes. So, did you use syrup? Oh my goodness. I wish I was at Kona's now. :guilty:

I had the Tonga Toast at Kona in October. While I thought it was very good, it was a little TOO decadent, which I can hardly believe I am saying. I think I would have enjoyed it alot more if I had shared it and something else with a family member. It was almost too "dessert-like" for me. VERY tasty, but just a bit too overboard, IYKWIM.
